I bought a PCGS MS70 2011(S)"Struck in SF" Eagle...I have a MS69 already..this particular label so far is limited to 6,000, and, if they don't make more, may be a nice collector edition...anyway, I was stunned when I examined the coin....NUMEROUS hit marks both sides, and, it is in WORSE shape than my MS69.NOT perfect, by any means.....I am sending for a replacement, which better be a true perfect coin, or, I have to ask for a refund....anyway, I thought 3 graders examined coins, individually, then, a consensus is made for the final grade...there is no way in HXXX 3 people could have assigned a perfect grade...I am in my "Paranoid" phase of this situation, and, all kinds of nasty thoughts are running through my head...like, 1 person graded this in 3 seconds, as PCGS was in a rush...or, the coin was swapped out by the seller, if that is possible...this thing has fraud written all over it..I just find it hard to believe it could be a simple grading error...my thoughts for PCGS being top dog just went out the door, bigtime...anyway, what IS the PCGS stand on how many people do grade a coin..is it still 3, or, was it ever 3? It is still 3 graders. Do you have imaegs of the coin? PCGS' grade guarantee would apply if the coin was that bad. It's possible a "bad" one accidently got an MS70 label when it should have gone 68.

I packed the coin up for return,so, can't shoot it...pretty simple, just a lot of hits that would really make it a 68...I just hope I get a true 70...I know I could probably send it to PCGS, and dispute it somehow, but, I'll let the seller do that... thanks BH1964

I'm not surprised since they don't inspect Silver Eagles very well in the first place.

Calvin, I am understanding of your problem, I for the life of me can NOT understand why people still send their coins to pcgs, I know what they were in terms of grading and being quite good, for a subjective topic as this. I have come to have more respect for ANACS for reasons they show being IMO, far more consistant in their grading skills, compared to years ago. I do believe your "perfect coin" could very well of fell between the cracks of the person( I do NOT believe that 3 people still or ever did inspect "every coin"!I have heard of this happening more and more, especially in the last year or so, I am sorry you have found your coin NOT to be all it should be, I would like to ask, just why did you choose this company to "grade" your coin?
I wish you the best results possible in your adventure, Mike........

I'm going to call PCGS this AM, and ask what they say, and, what to do...this should be interesting...just curious to see how they back up their program... That said, as a fairly new coin collector and amateur hobbyist, it takes time to learn what denomiation to send to what company..each has a strong point, and, weaks points, and, I learn through trail and error, and, reading as much as I can on the subject...the coin in question was a blind buy off ebay, and, an assumption a MS70 equates to a perfect coin..I'm sure, 98% of the time, they are flawless..I just didn't make the odds on this coin. To me, IMHO, with 4 dings on reverse lettering, and, a minor off-center rim, this coin normally would grade MS68 or 69 at best...If anything, the money I spent on this will be part of my "Education", and, I can accept the responsibility of buying blind, and not in hand..that was my mistake...that said, now PCGS has to explain their part in it...the other lesson for me is reaching into a new Denomination..Eagles are new to me, and, learning their unique aspects will take time, and, hopefully not too many buying mistakes...I actually prefer RAW coins for my albums...did I get caught up in all the labeling "Hype"..probably...I've learned my lesson to slow down, and, be more careful, and buy the coin, and not just a number.

"Professional graders" are giving you an opinion, nothing more. Yeah, PCGS has really turned me off as of late. I think some of us can do a far better job of grading then some of them.

"Send it in for review." Of course you've sent it back so you can't do that. But since they don't have the coin in hand to examine they can't make any comment about it. They don't know if it really has problems or not. All they have is your claim, not even any images.

I believe that with all the shopping channels craming coins up their(PCGS) butt's that they most probably only spend a few seconds looking at a coin (eagles) if they even look at all. No way do they hire enough qualified graders to grade tens of thousands of coins or bullion per year. On an unrelated note why pay a premium to grade a piece of bullion. ?

I never send coins to PCGS because they grade tuff. In fact, they under grade in my opinion. I've seen 65s graded as 63 and 64 too many times.

TPG's offer an opinion and nothing more, their grading is there to guide collectors. Just because they say a coin is "MS65" doesn't make it absolutely true. Remember, collecting is about the coin and not a piece of plastic. Another important point to note is that contrary to popular belief TPGs (especially the high profile ones) are not infallible.

Well said, well said! How right you are. We are coins collectors not plastic collectors. We should always keep that in mind.
