When Silver dipped below $28 a couple of weeks ago, I decided it was time to do my end of year Christmas self-shopping. The first bag of silver came in last week and the other two just arrived this afternoon:

My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash
My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash

That's one $100 face value bag of BU Peace dollars, one $100 face value bag of circulated Walking Liberty half dollars and one $100 face value bag of circulated Walking Liberty half dollars.

The Barber and Walking Liberty half dollars are generally pretty worn, but they are all at least recognizable and there were a few decent examples of each that I pulled out to store separately in my collection.

Originally, I wasn't going to bother checking the dates and mint marks on each coin, on the assumption that they would have already been cherry picked since APMEX does sell rare coins separately from the bags. But then I figured, what the heck...

Absolutely nothing of interest in the bag of Walking Liberty half dollars (almost all were from the 1940s with a very worn 1918, 1919 and 1920 thrown into the mix). The Barber half dollars were a different story, however:

My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash
My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash
My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash
My-End-Of-Year-Silver-Stash

NusmisMedia.com lists the 1896-O at $43 in G4 condition, and the 1897-O is listed at at $132 in the same condition. I'm not sure either coin would actually grade that high, but it still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside...

WOW! Both are a great find.

Have you searched for varieties yet?

I know just enough about 'em to search for key dates and mint marks. I have no idea what varieties to look for.

Thats a pretty sight!

I was wondering the same thing acloco was thinking regarding whether or not you have looked for varieties.

Does anyone know whether APMEX looks at these close enough to pull out varieities? I would think not but maybe someone else knows a more definitive answer.

It would be worth buying some bags for the silver obviously but also the added bonus of searching for varieties.

Wow some big bags! I wish I could get something like that! I actually am thinking about getting some more, but was thinking about going the paper route this time. But I'm thinking more of a roll of franklins or something.

How many total ounces is that?

As I said, I only know about dates and mint marks. What types of varieties are there, and are any more valuable than others?

The bag of Peace dollars weigh about 86 ounces (77 ounces of pure silver). Each of the other bags weighs about 80 ounces (72 ounces of pure silver). So that would be about 246 total ounces (221 ounces of pure silver). That's close to 14 pounds of pure silver!

You did indeed!

I later found out I could have got similar bags of the Barber and Walking Liberty half dollars cheaper at goldmart.com, but they charge an arm and a leg for credit card purchases and don't accept bank wires for amounts under $5000. I bought a couple of things from them one and paid by check, and it took nearly a month for the items to arrive due to the amount of time it took for the check to clear.

Me, too! It's just too bad I couldn't get bags of BU Barbers and Walking Liberties...

Nice haul. I'd also be curious to know how closely APMEX looks at what they're selling.

Who delivered them? Were they boxed, or shipped as shown? Surprised APMEX would put "precious metal" on the bag tags, but the bags are a giveaway.
