First off, DON'T clean it. If real, you will cut it's value by half or more by cleaning it. Second, does it stick to a magnet?

Thank you for the reply. I'm excited about this thing and no it does not stick to a magnet. If this thing is real the stories it could tell! Especially from where I got it. lol

It might just be the angle of the photos but that coin doesn't look genuine. The reverse appears off-center and/or broadstruck. These are heavily counterfeited.

I would also bet that it is a fake. The denticles look way off to me.

What are "denticles"? I did take the pic's with an angle because I'm not a pro at this, in fact I have no idea what I'm doing but after handiling this thing all day most of the tarnish came off and it's looking nice! Fake or not it's got me excited. I'll try to take some more pic's so you guys can get a better look at it.

Another quick test is to weigh it. Genuine should weigh 27.2 grams or a couple of tenths less to account for wear.

If the obverse and reverse are as far off-center as they look in the photos, there's not a chance it's real. Furthermore, Quote: but after handiling this thing all day most of the tarnish came off and it's looking nice! ....worries me. There should be nothing on a silver coin which comes off easily with handling. I'm keeping an open mind, though, and await further images.

SuperDave, Thanks for taking a look and the new pic's are the best I can do for now. This thing was black when I got it as seen in the first pic's. It is heavy and is scared up. I'll let you guys take one last look before I tell you where I found it! LOL.

Color me cautiously optimistic. It has a pretty decent strike and the details seem accurate, right down to a reeding hit on the obverse under LIBERTY - these only happen in the $1000 bags they leave the Mint in. Was it in the ground?

SuperDave, LOL, no not in the ground but here is the deal my friend. I'm a Medevac pilot in Afghan and found this all tarnished up this morning at the market. I only gave five bucks for it and the guy I bought it from did not speak English nor did he know what country this coin was from. I must say if it is a fake they did a good job but will get eyes on when I get home to be sure. However, fake or not I learned something today about coins and had a lot of fun doing it! It also gave me hope in something for a bit so I would say I got my money's worth. Thanks all for taking a look at it and when I get it looked at back home I will post the results for you.

Unlike everyone else, this thing doesn't look real to me, the folds in the dress do not look right and her face doesn't look right to me either. This is a picture of my 77-S and if you look at the folds, yours comes into a point where it meets the center of the legs, the originals are kind of flat, the face just doesn't look right but cant figure what it is

when I look at yours against mine, nothing looks right on the Obverse, and the Reverse is about the same. So I really think its fake

Quote: What are "denticles"? Those are the little rectangular things right inside of the rim that suround the perimeter of the coin. Yours look inconsistent and somewhat circular in places and slightly separated from the rim, whereas on Bryan's example they are evenly spaced, consistent and connect directly to the rim. However, if this is something you found, that's still pretty cool. As long as you didnt sink several hundred into it(which is what it would be worth if genuine), then it's still a neat conversation piece.

I'd say a very nice counterfiet coin. Well made and quite acurate, the lettering on the reverse is what I don't see matching up to a real 1876-S Trade dollar, serifs aren't quite correct and the thickness of some of the lettering seems a bit off. The place of origin also says a bit, (I know that Trade dollars were made for the oriental trade) the fact it came from an area known to be the counterfiet hub of rare US coins is suspect in itself somewhat. I'd take it to a reputable dealer near you for a look see in hand. If the dealer isn't sure about it, then I'd send it to ANACS as they are probably the cheapest grading company for you to submit it. Good luck, it very well could be real, this is a close call, almost impossible to tell from photos alone.

, CowboyAviation! The part that bothers me is the space above AMERICA. Looks bigger than above UNITED.
