I'm sure it isn't news to most of you but I just realized today that when you push the coin return button on a vending machine it doesn't give you back the coins you put in. I found this out when I put $0.55 in nickels into the machine and realized I was a nickel short. I pushed the coin return button and got back: (1) Nice Hawaii P Quarter (1) Nice Hawaii D Quarter (1) beat up Nickel I was quite pleased because I didn't have any Hawaii State Quarters yet. I think the next time hit the soda machine I'll cycle my coins a few times and see what the vending machine lottery gives me.

I did this at a hotels vending machine for about ten minutes after a late night of partying before it started to feel futile. Then again after that night it was possible I was just looking at the same quarters over and over. Either way at some point someone is gonna hit something special doing this.

Haha, yeah, I'm guilty of doing this here at the college.
What I think most don't know is (I think I have my facts straight, anyway), that the coins that go in go to a different place than the coins that go out, so owners might not appreciate us doing this...

In the local mall I did this with quarters in an ice cream machine and got Presidential dollar coins in return, until they took the ice cream machine out

I do this occasionally with nickels; I've lost a few nickels in the process unfortunately but I've also found a few goodies like 2 War Nickels, 2 Buffalo nickels (both 1936), and various ones from the 1940's and 1950's.

I do this a little in a slightly different method. I usually insert enough money so that after my purchase I get $.40 in change (1 dime, 1 nickel, & 1 quarter). Then if any are silver or otherwise interesting, I do it again for the change return only.

There are three tubes for 5-10-25 in a vending machine.
These are normally filled when the machine is serviced, but then the fun begins.
When a coin is inserted, it heads for one of those tubes. Each has a sensor, and if the tube is full, the coin falls down into the general coin bin, which can hold a half bag or so of change.
Goodies come from new change that falls into a partially emptied tube. When tubes are empty, the "use correct change" light comes on.

my sister got a silver dime from a vending machine. A kid tried to put it in but it didn't take it.So he gave it to her and she braught it home and I looked at it and told her it was silver. Then she sold it to me for a buck.

I spent a few minutes at the vending machine this morning converting $10 of nickels into quarters. I'll take a look at them tonight.
This could be a good way to get more bang out of my roll hunting buck. It is a real pain for me to return coins to my bank. I can only get to the branch with the coin counting machine on Saturday mornings. However, that is when everyone else is doing their banking and they tend to have a line out the door. If the machine jams or fills a bag it takes 30 minutes or more to get the manager to reset the machine. They will take customer rolls but only if you write your account number on every roll.
So here is my plan:
1. Buy $100 box of nickels at the bank 2. Convert nickels to dimes at the vending machines. 3. Convert dimes to quarters at the vending machines 4. Roll quarters and return to regular branch close to work
I know I won't find any silver from the machines but I could complete sets pretty quickly.

My friend was held in a Russian prison last year for several months for "smuggling cultural artifacts." Trumped up charges to try and get a bribe out of him. The coins were not very old and are easily obtainable and I am sure most of us have them in our collection. He was finally released when a U.S. Senator intervened on his behalf. On the way home he had several layovers in European airports. Some that lasted over night. They gave him a couple a bucks a day to get food and drink. He found out that the vending machines gave out the different coins so he went around to each of the machines in the airport and got MS copies of different euros after cycling through hundreds of coins in the machines. What else are you going to do when you can't sleep?

I almost wish I hadn't read this. There are two vending machines outside my office door, less than 30 feet away.
