I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on cracking out GSA Morgans?

I have just one GSA and personally this is one instance where I would not crack it out due to the historical nature of the holder and the accompanying case. If you dont have the case then I guess I might could see cracking it if you wanted too.

I crack most of my puchased slabs, I just don't care for slabbed coins. If it's a very high Grade or one of the rarer Dates I probably wouldn't. If it's a Common Date or lower Grade go for it if you want. There's thousands of them....I remember in the early 80's we would crack them out and sell for their silver value when Silver spiked to $50.

Quote: There's thousands of them....I remember in the early 80's we would crack them out and sell for their silver value when Silver spiked to $50. You, and a whole lot of other people, have been doing this for many years. No big thing; they were produced in the millions and there were plenty to go around. Now there aren't so many original GSA slabs, and I would consider it a disservice to numismatics to continue cracking them. Especially when both NGC and now ANACS will grade them in the original plastic. Within our lifetimes, GSA slabs will have considerable collectible value on their own.

I just picked up a 1884cc. And I have A hole in my Dansco . I don't have it in hand yet, but, the UPS driver left a delivery tag. I'll post pics when it arrives. Based on what I've seen I gave it MS60.

I would strongly suggest that you not crack it out. You will drop value and lose the historical connection all in one move. If you want an 1884CC for your album, buy a raw one or TPG slabbed one and crack it out. Please do not crack out the GSA coin.

I wouldn't crack mine out. Way too much history behind the coin itself AND the original GSA packaging.

Looks better than MS-60; I think it would grade MS-63 at a TPG. However, I echo other posters and advise against cracking the GSA slab. Buy another raw coin if you must put one in your album and hang on to the GSA coin with its original packaging.

I'm very happy w/ the help I rec'd. in this matter. I've checked FMV & ebay for pricing difference, And there is only a few dollars in difference. This is what led to my question. The consensus is more than leaning towards leaving it as is. Again Thank You all for your opinions & help with this. I will leave it in the GSA Holder.
