Hi All,
I have a bit of a poll question for you. As you know, postage rates just went up a bit this weekend. For now, I am holding my first class charge at $2.50, but had to raise my Priority rate from $5 to $5.25 and Express from $18.50 to $19.
My question is, how much do shipping charges figure in to your decision on where to buy from when shopping over the internet?
I have noticed that there is a large variety of prices that dealers charge for shipping. Some companies offer free shipping, some offer reasonable shipping charges (I like to think I fit in this category) and some seem to charge what seem like pretty steep amounts.
Any thoughts on shipping charges and how they affect your decisions on where to shop?
Thanks for your input! ACE Mike

I look for free shipping first even though I know in the back of my head that the selling price was raised to cover the free shipping. Then I check the other listings. John1

I have seen alot of the "high-brow" coins/paper sellers have FREE SHIPPING. Most insure the items, have delivery confirmation or both. Some skimp out and offer one or the other, or NONE. I look for the whole package deal, and if the seller does not offer it/them, I ask for it and of course will pay the ACTUAL cost. Then some of the sellers inflate the cost to recoup some extra funds. When I sell, I use the actual cost of the materials, shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation. I have been complained to about it, but they usually pipe down when it is broken down to them, which I now place in the description. It can only come back and burn the seller if their bases are not covered. There are some out there who will file a claim and still receive the item.

I greatly prefer "free" shipping, it makes for using less brain power. Strange, but my ebay shipping charges just dropped. LOL It went from $1.75 to $1.64 to ship a small bottle of VC.

I think almost all those FREE shipping statements are becoming a massive hoax. I get many of those mail order catalogs and lately all say FREE shipping but then include handling charges. Then too, they have all raised their prices to cover the so called FREE shipping. One place told me they have free shipping but you first have to pay the shipping, then go to a certain web site for a rebate. Of course when you go there you find you have to join and the cost of joining is about the same as the shipping would be. This so called FREE shipping is becoming the latest selling technique. Now ever used on HSN and many other TV adds. In other words I no longer look for so called FREE shipping at all. Just the items prices.

Anytime I see a free shipping listing, my interest level and motivation to buy increase even just a bit. I'll also usually look around if I'm looking for a particular coin to see if there are any similar listings with free shipping

I don't mind paying reasonable fees for shipping. Postage is not free and bubble wrappers are not free. But it is annoying to see 6.00+ shipping for a less than 1 ounce coin that you know 1st class postage with delivery confirmation runs only around 2.25 - That puts me off from bidding.

Unfortunately, as a seller, if you don't get recorded delivery - or some sort of tracking, and the buyer says they didn't get the package - you have no redress with Paypal. They just take your money off you and give it to the buyer. I don't sell coins on ebay - but I do sell other stuff and have really had to hike my postage costs to cover this.

Everyone likes free shipping but I compare final prices ie coin plus shipping and go for which ever is cheaper. Unless its something I really want then shipping does not really factor unless its outrageous. hence the lack of a certain type coin on your site....

I think I'm with nohope on this one. I don't really much care what the shipping price is. what I look at is if the total price (coin plus shiiping) is still within my budget and what I would want to pay for the coin. I lose a lot of auctions because of this but my price is my price and others can feel free to pay more.

Shipping always factors into my overall coin cost and whether or not it's worth it to order it.

Free shipping doesn't do anything for me. If I want an item and it's going to cost $40, I don't care if it's $30 with $10 shipping or $40 with free shipping. It's all the same to me and I'm not going to fall for the "free" shipping gimmick because it's quite obvious to me that the shipping costs are built into the item cost in some way.

When I buy, my max bid includes the shipping.

But if you offer free shipping on ebay - you get an automatic "5" on shipping price. Just like you get an automatic "5" if you offer 1 business day service and get the thing shipped in 1 day.

I always figure the cost of shipping into the price I am willing to spend on a coin. If I am willing to spend $25 on a coin and it is priced at $20 w/ $5 shipping I'm good, if the coin is $18 and $8 shipping, then I go with the first coin.

I look at the total cost of getting it into my hands and decide if I am going to buy it based on my budget and its value to me.
