Hello community. I am currently working on my first Dansco. I can't remember the number off the top of my head (Album is at home, I'm at work) but it is the 1938-present Jefferson nickel album including proofs. I have filled almost all holes from circulation and I have started hunting down proofs. If there is one thing that I hate more than the cows getten out of the pasture it is empty holes in a "complete" album. Therefore, I would really like to remove the proofs that I get from there 2x2s and put them into my album in order to fill ALL the holes. Does anyone see a downside to this, as in, will this cause my proofs to loose their luster over time etc.? I would love to hear what y'all do with your proofs and your opinions on taking proofs out of 2x2s to put them in albums. On a side note....it's happy bannana time!

I, too, have my Jeffersons in a Dansco album and carefully placed the proofs in two blank nickel pages at the end of the album (cotton gloves and care). Take them out. To me it rounds out the set. The blank nickel pages are because I want to get all the proofs - I'm older (61) and figure I should go for it.

I have been putting proofs in Dansco albums since I got my first Dansco albums over 27 years ago. I have had no problems doing this and I will continue to do it. Some with disagree, but I do it for me and no one else. The original government packaging for the proof sets is no more air-tight than a Dansco, so it is ultimately where you store the coins (low humidity and stable temperature) that matters the most. Of course, patience and care should be exercised when transferring your proofs into the albums.

It depends... For a series like Jefferson nickels or Lincoln cents, I just can't imagine myself going back and getting all the proofs. Other than some of the earlier Lincolns, I'm getting these all from circulation. For some shorter modern series, like Ike dollars or SBA dollars, I have the Dansco with the proof and SMS slots. They're not overly expensive, and the series is short enough that I can reasonably get them all. For newer stuff (e.g. Sacagawea, state and ATB Quarters) I'm just doing P+D. I'm not collecting all the denominations, so it feels weird to break up proof sets for the couple series I am collecting. It's nicer to have a circulation-strike album and then a book where I display my proof sets. They also make both clad and silver proof sets nowadays, and there's no way I'm going to get both so that I can fill both holes in a book and deal with the overlap in the non-silver denominations. I am quite happy to just collect the silver proof sets and pretend the clad don't even exist.

I prefer 2x2's over Dansco albums personally. I have my "set" in one area and my duplicates in another. I have all the proofs, some are in graded slabs, others are in Kointains and some are in Airtites and some are in just stapled 2x2's.I have a 3 ring binder for my proofs and 3 others for my Uncirculated issues. The Danscos I have used toned the coins, I was constantly updating my "set" and had to be careful that my nickels were pushed deep enough that the slide in the front of the coins would not rub over the obverses when I would upgrade. I still upgrade but now I just move them from one (set) collection to another (duplicates). For me there will come a time when I will say, that's it, This is my set, and I will fork out a lot of money and move each one into an Airtite and put them together like I did with my Buffalo nickels. These are in Airtites and then 2.5 x 2.5 clear flips and each page holds 12 coins. I plan to do the same with the Jeffersons.

I put all coins in Albums regardless of proofs or not. Mine are almost all in Whitman Albums and have been for as long as they've been made. I too really hate an empty space in an Album. That may be one of Whitmans biggest flaws. They have slots in some for coins that are rather difficult to ever, ever find anywheree. I still have an old Folder for Liberty Head Nickels with a slot for the 1913. Can't find that one anywhere. If you hate empty slots, don't use a Whitman. It will drive you nuts getting all the ones they have for coins.

Really nice looking set TheNickelGuy. This is a great way to store those gems. jbuck is right - fun to look at - higher res would be even better I recently got an el-cheapo Jefferson album with proofs from Wizard coin for 5.00 - and like it. The local coin shop may have a visiter looking to fill some of those proof holes someday soon.

Quote: jbuck is right - fun to look at - higher res would be even better You are correct, but I suspect TNG knew better; I would have been locked on that image for hours. Talk about a productivity killer!

I love putting Proofs in my Danskos. Open them up and the Proof coins just sparkle and look great in there with the other coins
