For the second time, I've spent hours preparing to fill someone's "want" list only to have them say:

"thanks; but I'm not ready to buy yet"

or

"thanks, not what I'm looking for"

Aggravating; particularly the latter, when what is offered is exactly what was described as "wanted."

End of whine.

:D

Give us an example of your ad. Maybe we can help word it better? Also, how are the photos?

Maybe before gathering the coins to fill the want list, ask them how soon do they plan to buy it and what is their price range?

And do they know the price range before too? Maybe they have a price in mind and don't realize it costs a lot more than that?

Well, for me, I put everything that I want on my wishlist, but I can't afford to buy it all right now. It's the stuff I'm hoping to acquire over the next few years. I'm just casting a wide net, looking for some bargains or trades other members have to offer.

For some reason it is common for people to say I want that and then change their minds. Such is the reason in many States they now have a cooling off period for items sold. For example by me if you buy a car, you have 7 days to change your mind and no charges are made. For almost all guns the similar sales are for a different reason but the idea is still the same. People just do change their minds.
Not to pick on females but have you ever noticed that they do that more than men?

There's also a sticker shock factor, even if you're aware of whatever it's going to cost well in advance. There may be as certain coin on sale, and you might think "OK, I know it's going to cost $XXX. I've got $XXX set aside in my coin budget and I'm ready to buy!" and then "Ah-hah, I found the coin I wanted for $XXX-2! That's even a little cheaper that I had planned for. But gee, $XXX-2 is a lot of money. Maybe I need to sleep on it."

There's also the "my wife caught me, I can't get it anymore but don't want to admit it" factor.

And then those people wonder why no dealers seem to be working to fill their want list.

I'd also like to know the details of your process and situation. Are these people hiring you to build a specific set of coins or fill holes in their sets? Are you delivering only after the set is complete? Are you in communication with these people during the buying process? Is there a contract of any sort? I could go on with these questions. Maybe I should wait for an answer. xD

I had a customer who didn't want to pay $425 for Krand oz. His exact words were "I'd like to get one when they drop below $400."

I took a $50 deposit, and told him I'd call.

Prices dropped, I called and left an answering machine message and a message later with a secretary, telling him we had one held for him, the price was $398.50, bring the difference and get the coin.

Three weeks later, he calls, say he's changed his mind, refund his $50. By then gold was down another $50, which was precisely the purpose of the deposit.

When I explained this, he came up with an amazing reply:

Quote:
I didn't authorize you to get one for me. I said I'd like to get one when it dropped under $400, but that's like saying I'd like to go to Hawaii some day.

It took him three weeks to tell me he didn't want it?!

I just ignored him until I could get $405, sold it, and refunded his money.
Rest in Peace

I learned long ago not to go out of my way on want lists unless it was for a customer who has proven they're willing to spend consistently. Otherwise, they see what's in inventory ready to sell.

One of the most annoying types wants to know every configuration of silver they can buy, and they're either "just thinking" about buying silver or want to get $20 worth. Or the ask the cheapest way they can buy silver coins, then "does that rate include uncirculated Morgan dollars, too?"

I personally think people should add a price or price range when using the wanted section of this forum.
That way sellers aren't wasting their time on wish lists instead of wanted lists.
On the other hand it is a market place and things change, things being minds for the most part.
If you ever see my handle in the wanted section rest assured I have the cash and plan to buy, FYI

Once again, from the forum's want list, I go through the hour or two of motions to select, photograph, and email coin images someone agreed they were interested in buying and.......................and................"I'll pass."

Heck, they even complained about me sending photographs when I sent them, stating, "I didnt ask for photographs, I asked how much you wanted for the coins."

Whine over.

The process I use:

1. look at the forum "want list"
2. contact the person
3. ongoing communication
4. want disappears

I wont give up, though....just wanted to vent.

But I will probably adopt some of your perspectives.

Thanks.

(back to the want list...mebbe someone's looking for wooden nickels ! I have lots)

There are so many reasons for people changing their minds as to a purchase and sellers should know that. And not even worry about it when it happens. For me at coin shows I see a coin I would like to get and the dealer says I'll give you 10% off on that one. I tell him I'll think about it. Walk on and find a similar coin for much less and buy it. I then see the other dealer and he states well I'm still holding that coin for you.
Dealers too sometimes get misslead by a simple statememt. Possibly true on the internet since there are so many dealers now here, finding a coin you THINK is the one you want and telling the dealer that can get confusing since the buyer is really still searching. You said it's what you want, not I'll buy that one. And too people sometimes blurt out something they want but can't really afford. Sort of like looking at a Ferrari and able to afford a Chevy.
If your into selling coins or anything, you really just have to know the buyers better.

I'm taking this as a bash against me, I turn him down because the price he quoted was $50 for 11 world coins that came to about $30 at the most.
If he had sent the price in the first place like I asked it would have been done then.

If I want a car, no matter how "good" a random salesman thinks his car is, it's not the fact that I'm going to by this car. And if the salesman tries to "shame" me into buying it, that's the deal breaker.

If I authorize a person to compile a list (or to find a car), or pay down a deposit, I commit myself to the sales (in hopes that (s)he wouldn't gouge the prices on me).
If the person "worked" on his/her own initiative then I feel absolutely free to either accept or not accept the offer based on how sound I find it.
