I was at a local coin show this weekend looking for proof Franklins for my set.

Did some browsing and the show was great, had some very high quality coins.

Anyway, I noticed a 1956 Franklin Proof labeled " DDO Type 1"

I knew there was a DDR Type 1 and a DDO Type 3, but I immediately figured it was mislabeled. It couldnt be a type 1 proof, could it? Picked it up, flipped it over to check the eagle and... BINGO

Can anyone please give me a Type 1 confirmation/grade/value?

By the way... priced at $65, got it for $40!

I do not know what the difference is between type 1 and type 2 on the proof Franklin's, can you describe it for me? This is my 1956 proof for comparison. (NGC proof 66 W cameo)

Count the feathers on the eaglet wings- Type 1 2 has four feather and better overall wing definition while Type 2 1 was three feathers with mushy wings. 1956 proofs started out with Type 1 but switched to Type 2 part way though the mintage, leaving the Type 1 the rarer variety of the two. Later proofs should be Type 2 but there are some proofs known with Type 1 wings while there are also business strikes with Type 2 wings.

Actually, the type 1 has the more mushy design and the type 2 is much more sharply defined.

biokemist, you are correct that some busniess strikes were type 2... Only 1958P and 1959P have this designation. These coins (much more common) were minted with retired proof dies. There is also a 1959 "class III" which is hubbed with both type 1 and type 2 dies. It has traits of both type 1 and type 2.

muddler, your coin is a type 2, which is more common. It is a very beautiful type 2 proof coin with nice cameo... mine has no cameo at all.

Thanks guys, I figured it was a type 2 but there is no designation on my NGC slab. My goal is cameo proof 66 or better for the series the remaining eight will be tough.

I'm not very experienced with grading proofs. Mind sharing the grades as a point of reference?
Any thoughts as to how my coin would grade?

Interesting thread. Made me go look at a 1956 proof set that was in the pile to break open.

The one I have has the Type one half dollar.

Any suggestion, as to leave it in the set, or maybe break the set up and send the half into
a TPG. I guess I should ask if there is much value difference between a type onr vs a type two

From what I have found, there is a big difference in price, assuming equal grade/cameo.
Apparently there were only about 20,000 type 1 coins made. 64,65 goin for 200 or so, but higher grades/cameos price as high as 700.

Again, this is based solely on ebay listings and a few books I am reading.

One thing to know about 1956 proof sets is that some of the sets with the type 1 Franklin in them also have a VERY nice doubled die reverse cent.
