I have placed some coins on ebay (this dime is not one of them), and in my opinion the images are not bad in quality, but can they be too big?

Too small of an images leaves the potential bidder questioning the coin quality.

I am fairly certain that there is a "rule of thumb" for the size of the image compared to the size of the coin (Large Dollars being larger than Dimes, etc...).

I like the largest one - this way there is no doubt what you are bidding on.

That is a nice size for the pictures (800).

I put my photos on photobucket at about 1000 pixels on the smallest side, sometimes I use 800 but never smaller than that. Photobucket is great as you don't pay ebay costs on them. I have an ebay folder in my account, and use the img source into ebay description listing with HTML on.

For that image, much bigger than the 800 you posted is just bigger and not really higher resolution because of focus and chromatic aberration. But other than that, I think bigger is better, IMO, unless it starts making flaws look a lot more dramatic than they should. Of course, you shouldn't make pictures small to hide flaws.

The following is purely opinion.

Image sizes for auctions should relate to the size of the coin. I like your 500px pic for a Dime; even the 400 works. I generally list Morgans at 800px on ebay.

It's like this: as long as your images are clear, you will only hurt yourself by posting huge pics. Very few prospective buyers are experienced at interpreting images larger than the coin itself, even if they're competent sight graders. They'll be seeing details which wouldn't bother them in-hand, but digital photography accentuates some problem areas in coins. Undeservedly.

Big and clear enough to leave no doubt? Of course. But that's a sweet spot, and doubt lies both below and above the proper size for a given coin.
Rest in Peace

A sharp 450 pixel pix is plenty for ebay. Keep in mind there are still folks out there on dial-up.

Big pics can definitely make a coin look worse than it really is. I have a 1922 PD that I thought was pretty good until I looked at it through my USB microscope....yow !
