I just tried to enter an NGC certification number in my registry collection and this is the response that came back: "This number is no longer valid."
When I ran the number through the NGC Verification Database, this was the reply: "the grade for this coin has been deleted."
The coin: MS66(*Star)FT Roosevelt dime Cert Number: 2559442-035
Any ideas?

It might have been returned for an upgrade, in which there would be a new number attributed to the grade if there are changes. I might be wrong, you can try calling NGC and consult with them.

NGC got some 'splainin' to do?
SWAG: Counterfooters used that number, so they deleted it, and would have to approve the original in hand, and give it a new number.

the last scenario is my guess even though is a scary one. Kind of sounds like the coin you have may be a counterfeit slab/coin and the original one was sent in to NGC for review or something else and has been deleted out of their database because either the coin was over graded or some other reason for it to be resubmitted and then given a different cert number or someone cracked out the coin and sent the label into NGC to be removed from their database (which does happen). Either way I am worried that your coin needs to be definitely reviewed by someone because this is a scary situation you are in. Any way you can take some pictures of the front and reverse of the slab and post them on the forum? I hate to say it but the only reason I can see this happening is if the coin you are holding is not the original coin that was submitted to NGC for grading Can you give us some information on where you got the coin from? EDIT: Never mind I found it here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...p=true&rt=nc

I did some more digging, and this is the same coin you received (cert# 2571824-003), just a different cert number, which makes no sense to me. http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/C...=2571824-003 . I was going to say maybe NGC deleted the wrong number out of their database but I don't think that is it either since you are looking at the cert number on the slab, I am at a loss on this one unless you do not have the coin in hand and the one pictures is a old picture and the cert number you receive will be 2571824-003

The seller, "ohiodimes" claims they are able to re-add the dime to their NGC registry set with no problem and that they can also verify the dime in the NGC database?
I located the seller in the NGC Registry and this coin is listed in their registry set. See the image.

I sent a message to the seller asking if they could explain how the same coin shows up in two different slabs and different certification numbers. I'll let you all know what they respond.... if they respond

NGC Coin Price Guide Value $33.75 for this dime? So much for the STAR treatment.

something sure seems awful fishy here and I am not sure what it is but something aint right. At first I thought maybe you had a counterfeit slab but once I found it on ebay and could actually see the coin and slab I don't see any evidence of that, I just am not sure whats going on because that 2571824-003 coin sure looks exactly like the one pictures in that ebay auction

Bryan. I have looked at the two different certified slabs as best I can and the coin inside the different slabs appears to be the same coin
Before the discovery of the second slab with what appears to be an identical coin, the seller responded rapidly to my messages. I have since messaged the seller twice regarding the possible duplicate/counterfeit slab with no response.
Perhaps someone didn't expect a whole group of experienced coin hounds to be looking at this issue at the same time and from different perspectives

It looks like the seller is not going to reply to questions concerning the validity of this coin: Hopefully, they are not responding because they do not have an answer and not because of something more serious.
What can I do now, assuming this person is not going to respond? Should I report the coin? If so, to whom? Should I wait and try to call NGC in the morning..... or any other ideas

Definitely call NGC and explain the situation. They should be willing to expend whatever effort is required to determine how the serial number was deleted and decide what the status of this coin actually is.

OK, the seller has finally responded to the questions. Here is what the seller said:
Quote: I had sent the coin back to NGC for regrade and re-holdering in the new scratch resistant holders. I did not realize that NGC had changed the serial number. The coin is legitimate *I called NGC and verified the seller's comments.
I am very relieved to know that this is one of those times when there was a genuine mistake and not someone trying to take advantage of another person!
Bryan1315 had previously come to this conclusion as one of the likely scenarios but I would like to offer kudos to everyone for your thoughts and concern in this matter! It is very comforting to know that I/we have CCF to turn to in such instances!
