Just found this in a small lot of quarters and dimes along with a handfull of ASE's that I picked up for 20% under spot. It is by far the nicest Mercury dime that I own...I only have a few but they are all well worn. Just wanted your thoughts on it... Thanks, Don

XF40, maybe XF45. There's something funny about the color, possibly environmental damage. It could just be the photo or toning.

I would not grade as high, because the obverse high points has heavier wear than the reverse. I agree with the environment damage or a bad case of possible cleaning.

I'm at VF35 on this dime.

I agree with VF-35. It's a bit of an odd coin to me though as the obverse wear is out of proportion to the reverse wear. And yes, the color is strange too. I've ever seen one toned quite the same way.

I have lots of Washingtons that toned that color -- I think I read it's from the old brown 2Xs they were kept in, causing that ash grey toning.

I think the coloration is making the obverse wear look greater than it really is. Look at the separation of the long feathers in the wing - it is normally not that clear on a VF dime.
It's not a type-of-1916 is it? I am frustrated that I am not able to 100% tell from pictures still, but the high-and-tight mintmark makes me think that way. That would explain the greater apparent wear on the obverse compared to what appears to be a XF45 reverse.

Thanks for all the replies.
The coin looks better in person, there are not many scratches aside from on the cheekbone but the color is pretty strange.
It was a quick handheld pic under a bathroom light at iso 1600 and a fairly slow shutterspeed and I think I had to push it in post a bit. Kind of regretting selling the tripod, ball head and macro lens.
It was a pretty fun find in an otherwise typical bag of 90%.
Thanks again, Don
