inherited these coins over 12 years ago from my grandfather. He wasn't a coin collector, but for some reason he held on to a few dollar coins which my grandmother gave to me. Just got around to taking a closer look at them. I know absolutely NOTHING about coin collecting but do find it fascinating and was wondering what if anything they would be worth, what I should do with them, and possibly a grade for each one. The photos are 1000x750, so they may be clickable to become larger, sorry for making them so large, wanted the best quality I could provide. 1922 Peace Silver Dollar This is the nicest of all the coins. It seems to have a really nice luster, almost looks fake the shin is so perfect. It does however have some weird small black marks, they seem like superficial marks, not sure what they are, but I'm afraid to try to clean them off. It was in a hinged jewelry type case with a keychain holder with the words "Lucky Dollar" on the inside of the top of the case. Not sure it was in circulation that long since it's so nice. It was hard to get detail in the pics since it was so shiny. How my Grandfather kept it on the keychain in the 'Lucky Dollar' box Removed from keychain 1921 Peace Silver Dollar Second nicest of the 3 silver dollars I have 1899 Morgan silver dollarCleanest of the 2 I have. Thanks in advance! Edited by Allblkdout07 02/29/2012 6:16 pm

Thanks for the info. I seriously doubt it was cleaned or any of them for that matter. I didn't clean them and I'm almost certain my grandfather wouldn't have. Interesting that particular dates are worth more. I have a 1923 also, but it's dirty. Looks like it may have some really nice detail too. Anything special with a 1923?
I know the 1922 is a common date I figured since it was so clean it might have value.

I'm trying to learn about grading myself so I can't offer an opinion on these -- I'm just learning small change now. Anyway, the coin facts page (check the column to the left) has some basic guidelines for grading. For prices, go to Numismedia Fair Market Value. That will show you the prices that dealers are getting -- and that would mean uncleaned coins because cleaning damages the coin. You have some really nice keepsakes -- I hope you can keep them in the family.

there is no doubt that 1922 has been cleaned, I am not sure about the 1921 but that 22 has polish lines all over the Obverse and Reverse

Is the Morgan dollar I have posted a New Orleans mint? I read the 'O' is supposed to appear above the 'O' and 'L' on the back, but this one has it between the 'D' and 'O' or is that not the typical mark representing N.O. mint?

Are you referring to those diagonal lines that all go in the exact same direction top left to bottom right? I thought that was just the finish on the coin. I figured polish lines would most likely go in different directions, or in a circular fashion. If any of them had been polished it would be the 22 since that was his 'lucky dollar'. SDcoinguy was remarking about the 21 though, which may not be the one he was commenting on. I don;t see any polish marks on the 21.

22(VF-30) and 99 O(VF-35)are high mintage and worth about melt about $30 each the 21 is a low mintage key date and even though it has been cleaned is worth $$ to a collector looking for a lower cost example(up to $150 value) you might want to keep these coins as a keepsake from your G'Dad WELCOME to the Forum! ............and yes, O is New Orleans mint mark.

From the pics I don't think they are genuine.

Why would you think they weren't genuine looking at the pics?! That's funny.
My grandfather was born in I think 1903 and lived until he was 95, so I have no reason to believe these are fake. All of them have some form of wear, and the roller marks stated by someone have me very intrigued now, interesting, thanks!

dont worry, I think they are the real deal. if you google 1921 Peace dollar you can find some neat info on that coin. if you can, try a different light set up to get a better idea of whats going on in regards to luster, polish marks, dirty, dings, etc.. you did a fabulous job at these pics I might add. i would hope this spurs your interest in collecting and you can finish the Peace dollar set, as you have one of the key dates

i honestly think that 1922 removed from the key chain could be MS65+
