So, as you can tell from my number of posts, I'm new here. Hi.

Anyway, just thought I'd share a nice little story that I'm sure you've all heard a million times.

My 7 year old had about 7 years worth of change in his piggy bank and weighed quite a bit. (Ended up pulling $106 out of it not counting the pennies that I haven't gotten around to rolling yet after quitting last night after 600 of them). Found quite a few wheat pennies and 2 silver dimes.

Today I took them to my credit union branch that I have designated to be my dump site.

While I was unloading this hoard of rolled coinage, I struck up a conversation with the teller and he told me that there are two people that come in pretty regularly and buy a couple hundred dollars worth of half dollars and quarters. A couple of days later, they bring them back. They've both told him that they're coin roll hunting.

Since they aren't marking the rolls (the guy had gotten curious and checked), he decided to investigate a little more, and found that these two guys have been trading the same checked coin rolls for months.

So anyway, I'm glad I chose this branch as my dumping point. The branch near my house has a lot less traffic, so I think I'll be better off getting my rolls there as planned.

If you bank at Navy Fed in San Diego, and are getting your rolls from the older branch on Mira Mesa, there's a good chance that you are in a fruitless search. And if you're the ones doing this, you may want to re-evaluate your approach.

Not that I have any personal experience to go off of.. Just seems like common sense to me.

Just thought I'd share.

Welcome!

I dump northside and "eat" southside. Sealed boxes are no worry but sometimes I get CWR's and don't want my own.

I'm going to ask the branch near me if they're able to order sealed boxes or not. I don't know if credit unions operate differently from banks in that respect.

I buy my boxes of nickels from one branch and dump them at another, I buy my boxes of half dollars from the branch I dump my nickels at and dump them at the branch I buy my nickels from. The CWR's of dimes I get from both branches are dump them at a third branch on Saturdays.

I just posted something similar recently. For years I ordered countless boxes of coin from my bank free of charge (some banks charge to order boxes), checked 'em and then dumped them elsewhere. Well, some dude has been ordering like 30 boxes of nickels at a time and then bringing them back to the same branch. That mad the tellers so now we can't order boxes anymore (unless you have a business account, and then its 30 dollars a pop no matter how many you order).

I used to use those Navy Feds, too. Now I live in WA and have another bank but on a side note, Navy Fed is the best ever.

They sure are! I've chatted up the tellers at both the dump branch and the pick up branch and *hopefully* they'll continue to be helpful. They've been great so far. I did find out that I have to order $1000 worth of halves at a time if I want a box though... Not sure if I want to do that yet.

I tried the other day to get some boxes/bags of pennies from my bank. They told me I had to order them, for a fee. I didnt bother to ask how much.

Spaaz....i would order the 1000 dollars worth, you get the money right back after you dump em. Minus whatever you find and keep, of course. Save up a thousand for seed money, so to speak.

I probably will do the box for $1000 since you don't exactly lose any money on the deal :) In the meantime, they have a couple hundred dollars worth in the vault and I'm going to get them tomorrow.

But wouldn't it be a little weird when they come back from the vault with your rolls and you say, "Well, I don't want this one, this one, or that one... Can you trade them out for ones without markings"?

I just bought my first boxes of pennies from 2 different banks. Have to admit, both places had grouches for tellers. One said they take 10 percent when turning them in. The other said 10 bucks if you don't have an account. I'm thinking they see a few penny hunters, lol.

If you are honest with the tellers about what you do, tell them you mark the rolls. They'll understand
