Seen an increasing number of fake slabs on ebay recently. They usually fall short of the full market value of an original, but still cheat large sums of money out of buyers. I found one seller this morning on ebay UK: http://www.ebay.com/sch/hannahcoins...=p4340.l2562The listings are all badly done, I suspect all the slabs are fake. I've checked the cert. number on the 1796 US dollar, which checks out on the PCGS registry, and was sold for nearly $4,000 in 2009 in its auction history. The seller also has some fake high value Chinese coins listed for sale. I've reported the listings to ebay and emailled PCGS. Question is, will it do any good? Does eBay/PCGS take it seriously enough to do anything about it? www.kingstoncoincompany.co.uk

Yes, ebay will remove them if they are clearly counterfiet as those are. That 1796 Bust Dollar has AU level detail at least. There is a reporting link within the CCF forum. Here's the real 1796 Bust Dollar with that cert number. It sold on Heritage a few years ago: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?hdnJu...2315&x=0&y=0

As a novice "counterfeit finder" was it the dates in parenthesis that really alerts you.
Thanks in advance.

The hologram label on the slab is poor, but these folks are getting better and better.

There is NO WAY I'd touch that 1796 DBD.

jeff11, thanks for the heads up about the fakes on ebay. I have been looking on ebay to get a range of a what a 1878 7/8 TF silver morgans pcgs 63 to 65 are going for. I am almost ready to purchase one. I never knew that I can have access to a cert # to see what it went for. Then again I am learning. How does one go about investigating a cert # ?

Quote: I never knew that I can have access to a cert # to see what it went for. You will usually need a paid subscription to PCGS and NGC to access auction prices. You can verify cert numbers on their websites for free. You are correct that knowing auction prices is a great way to determine market value for coins. Nothing beats knowing what others are paying before you buy. Heritage Auctions lists wholesale/retail values and recent auction results for coins they have listed for sale (auction). Heritage allows you to sign up for free and access this information. It is worthwhile for sure. Good Luck!

Good news is - that ebay user has been removed from ebay, so it seems some action was taken. No doubt they will try eventually to open a new account, but at least its a very positive step. I'll keep a close eye out for any others.

The first one is coming up as a 1913 $2.5 in AU55 if thats correct?
Make sure you just enter the last 8 digits after the forward slash, it should work out for you
And Superdave - You definitely got a point there, suppose no harm in trying to make it a bit harder for them though
