If nobody is already doing this (and I hope that they are!), then I am going to attempt to put together a list of all decimal coins with all of their variations / errors etc in a spreadsheet. Greg McDonalds books are good, but not easy to read sometimes due to the space constraint in printing. What I am after is one file. 5c,10c,20c,50c,$1,$2. A worksheet for each denomination, so when I am noddling I can just tick the boxes. Keeping it simple (stupid). What I see on this forum is a lot of sharing of information regarding coin variations which is spread in a lot of threads. I would like to create a summary of this, which would of course be available to everybody on this site. btw - for those with a good memory I am still working on the auto-noddling machine

1 sticky thread for each denomination here in the forum would be fantastic, even its own separate title. people could add to each of them and over time maybe a mod could edit them down to just facts and data?

I like that idea , that would work. From that a working spreadsheet could then be created which summarised all of the information. btw - I am a software engineer / DBA and I cannot work in just text files.

Dibby, You are a dba and want to put this info into a spreadsheet? More seriously, I think you will run into problems with defining what gets included and what does not. eg. Do Cuds get included or not? (how well known/common would they need to be?) What about die cracks? Rotations, do you want to include degrees of rotation as I would think there would be more/less common examples. what about centering on the 2000 mule how about condition? How common does something need to be to make the list (as an extreme example, do you list the 50c pattern coins?) Where does it end? I actually think this is a good idea (I have even been thinking of doing the same thing), but if you define stuff like this first you will end up with a more useful end result. What do you think?

Good idea. So far I think Fred Lever's Reference Book is about as comprehensive as it gets. You're right that a lot gets discussed here (like the 2010 5c SD sizes recently), but you can never be sure when that sort of information will get published. I have coin books to, but its annoying trying to find a coin, and then looking for the variation or error for it. And it is like hidden in small print or worse another 15 pages away and you have to flick back and forth.

Quote: Where does it end? That's what me makes we want to something like this myself (so I can include and exclude what I want). Still, I think the more information the better, and if it's in a digital form you can tailor it to your needs anyway.

Yes - a spreadsheet! I would import this into my coin database, but for the common man a spreadsheet would be easier

From my experience I would say the layman coin collector would find an online version simpler to use than spreadsheet as a spreadsheet does require some knowledge on how to use it

Goodness, I could spend every day for a month working on a spreadsheet, and still not list all the errors I have. I doubt that I'd even find them all. All I've got so far is a list of all the threads/topics I've started here on CCF with piccies or lists of my error coins, but there's a heap I haven't done yet.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

MrT : Going back to basics just now and making an automatic photographic machine (i.e. webcamera with an autofeed). Fun to learn some robotics though :-)

Nancy - I was not suggesting listing all of the errors but the variations. Errors are infinte I would imagine whereas the variations could be identified.
Spreadsheet / sql aside I just want a list of coins that I have to have in a folder to have a complete decimal collection. i.e What size(sd) on each 5cents, IRB spacings... Plus of course the money spinners - the wavey2, the incuse 50c.
MrCruise : To what level are you taking your system to?
