does anyone have info on 1869 RPD FS-302 (FS-004) Two Cent? this Two Cent Piece has repunched date....is it all 4 numbers = 1869 or just first 2 numbers = 18 ? Also does this coin have a die break from rim into 69 too? Sorry I do not own a copy of Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties to learn more about details. Maybe if you have a Cherrypicker's Guide, you can scan & post pic of coin/info/price? I don't know, but does the Cherrypicker's Guide have prices listed of each of Die Varieties Coins ? thanks!

The 1 and 8 are repunched to the north. There is also an image of a D to the left and slightly overlapping the G of GOD. Later die states will have a crack extending from the rim through the bottom of the date, can also be found with a spur on the bottom of the 6. The CPG lists FS-02-1869-302 with a ~1.5x premium in all grades.

What does a ~1.5x premium in all grades mean? If a normal G4 is worth $20 is this re-cut only worth $30 in G4? I won this coin in ebay and waiting for it to arrive. I hope she does not pull a bait & switch. when I ask she said this this the exact coin that will be sent. here is the ebay item photo...it appears to be the same coin with your details? even with a spur on the bottom of the 6.

Photo above of 1869 is exact 2c I did receive! Does have die crack from rim to rim running at bottom of date with a spur on the bottom of the 6. 1 has extra metal above both sides of base of 1 & at very top of 1 too. What is this worth?

Quote: The 1 and 8 are repunched to the north. Correct this matches the same one I own. Depends on who is buying of course. I just cherrypicked my first one of these after 20+ years of looking. Some say this is no longer a needed variety in the 2¢ piece collection, it was once known as the 1869/8, later changed to the recut date, it is still listed in many price guides as the overdate, however much research has determined this is not an overdate, but only a recut date with a die break. There has been an PCGS graded coin in Good listed and gone unsold on ebay for some time they are asking $275 for it, way too much in my opinion. [eBayItem]220537272683[/eBayItem] I'd gladly pay $30-45 for the coin you show. It is a tough one to find. The only real issue yours seems to have is the dig in the center of the obverse. It is a really tough variety to find, usually overpriced when listed as the recut or overdate. But at a minimum you did really well, I'd be happy to add another one to my collection of varieties in my 2¢ collection. I'm looking for one in VF or better condition to upgrade the one I picked up last month on ebay, mine is probably a VG I'll see if I can shoot some photos soon and post here. I just got some new macro photo gear, but still need to receive some adapters to hook the lens to the bellows. EDIT-to add info on pricing http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...oinid=382659THis shows the price in G-4 at $150.00 which I still think is way overpriced on this variety, as it is not really an overdate as mentioned in my post. Kevin Flynn and Frank Leone both authors of Two Cent variety books state that same fact. But more power to anyone that can get $100+ on a good example.

westcoin, Thanks for Great info! do you have the ebay item # of the VG you picked up last month on ebay to see the listing photos of coin until you shoot some your own photos and post here? Does your coin have the big spur out of left bottom of the 6? Mine, obv shown above, has that small issue of 2 dig/pits in the center of the obverse [G-4?], but rev/back side is much better [VG-8?], below is rev photo, the white spot at 7 o'clock position is just some paper dust and not on coin. you can see start of die crack at rim to left of 1 then it comes out of bottom of 6 then heads into rim under the 9... this coin must have been very near the end of using this die, since it has the big spur on 6 & crack runs Rim-to-Rim? PS... you got any 3 cent nickels {3CN}, I am looking for a 1880 3CN from G4-F15, nothing too costly.

I'll get a shot up later tonight, of my coin, (I do have a good macro lens that works), the auction I won is here [eBayItem]110818303574[/eBayItem] But you can't see the coin, it was in a lot of 5 1869's like I said I've been trying for a long time to get one, this auction paid off and I was pleasantly surprised to find one in G/VG. I'll have to pull it out and shoot it when I get home from Starbucks, having my mocha now! I'll also see if I have any 1880 3¢ nickels, they are one of my other favorite series too, gotta get Kevin Flynn's book on them, I also like the Shield nickels and Ed Fletcher's book on them is a great resource, but I find them too expensive to chase after in the grades I like, if somebody is into varieties the Shield nickel is the series to get into!

The one for $810.00 is not the 1869/8 variety it must have the die break, the second one posted is exactly the coin. I had to get home and pull it out it was the bottom left coin in the group of 5 coins. Mine was not as nice as I thought it was :( Anyways as I said I want a VF+ example one day so I'll keep looking. I'm shooting now and will get the photo up in a bit, after dinner (I have strange hours, I eat dinner around 3am usually - the life of an astrophotographer)!

Here is the close up of my coin's date area, it is definitely not as nice as I thought it was. It will be heading to an acetone bath in the morning, as I noticed a bunch of green gunk on it, it was also corroded in a few spots and that was removed rather roughly (too bad), but at least the photo shows the die break and the spur quite well, the die break extends off more towards the rim on the left than the photo shows, though it is not as late of die state as I'd like either, oh well, not to bad considering the photo I bought it from. Hope this helps confirm your coin. As to the 3¢ nickel you asked about I don't have any 1880's only a couple of 1881 dates, a VF and a nice AU, sorry. I do have 1865, 1866, 1868, 1873 as well. If you are interested in trading or selling this 2¢ please contact me via e-mail.

I think I can see maybe why they called this a 1869/8... the die crack caused the 9 to close-up making it appear as an 8 ! My die crack looks like your coin above from rim to rim. For now, I am going to hold on to it; I have the 3CN coins you listed, not in AU but just good hole fillers! The guy that has this same coin for $89, does have make offer on it, maybe he will take $50 or less? You would be surprized how low they sometimes come down -$$ on the Best Offers. I own a few telescopes... I was into astro stuff very much until my back out went very bad, so I cannot do much lifting & bending to use my scope stuff much :( PS... Any ideas of how many of these 1869/8 die break 2 cents exist? One place on web said about 3 dozen = 36, but I think there are more, maybe a few hundred+ ?

My best guess is around 100-200 pieces probably exist in all grades, with a majority in fine or less. I've only seen a couple in high grades. I'm sure the die broke apart pretty quick after the break went through the date. This is way more rare than the 1867 DDO variety, which I have a few of. Like I mentioned I've been trying to cherry pick one for 15 - 20 years at coin shows and on ebay, teletrade, etc. last month was my first one in all that time.
