Quote: Rare coin that needs ID OK, I'll give it a go--it's a normal 1933 halfpenny.

That is a normal 1933 1/2d. I have never heard of an over date 33 1/2d. The seller obviously bought it as an over date. That is the trouble with these BS ebay listings. The people that get duped believe that their coin is real and will eventually try and sell it as "the real deal".

According to Ian McConnelly's Book, Australian Pre-Decimal Coin Varieties, 1st Edition published 2005, page 18: Australian Halfpenny Varieties:1933 - M - Overdate - Last 3 over 2 - V. Scarce So it does exist, seems like it's just not been on anyone's radar. http://www.quicksales.com.au/buy/au...pe5=&i=30&d=

I've heard about this variety for years and years. Never seen one. Been told it doesn't exist and is likely a bit of Strike Doubling.

Well I have also learned something. I know about the penny overdate but a 1/2d is mews to me. As far as I can see the 3 looks exactly as it should. Does someone have a picture of the overdate?

The coin being listed in Ian McConnelly's book doesn't confirm it's existence. The book, while a decent work, is neither comprehensive nor particularly accurate. I've never seen one and someone I know who looks at hundreds of thousands of coins a year has never seen one either. It's something of a "legend" and has never really been confirmed.

Quote: Does someone have a picture of the overdate? There is a link in my previous post, but as already mentioned it may just be date doubling or something similar. The ebay coin's final 3 is slightly different(for some reason) to mine,i have about 30+ coins and wasted an afternoon scanning them.

I would imagine that the 33 1/2d over date would be similar to the 1d 33 over date. I agree with markn that it is probably just an urban legend

Basil beat me to it! (the Joseywales coin). Interestingly the PCGS listing has it as 1933 (not 33/32). Do any of the big 3 certifiers list the 33/32 halfpenny?

I can see some doubling at the top of the 3. Looks a little similar to the 1D overdate without the middle left of the 3 showing a bulge for lack of a better word.
