Well I went to dump some coins today which is the same amount that I always dump because I feel it is not unreasonable. $700 face value which is 2 boxes of nickels and 2 boxes of dimes. I went to a branch today and what looked like a manager saw me and was like "woah woah woah, where did you get all those coins?" I explained that I collect coins and I got them from a bank. He asked how often I do it and I told him I go to that branch once every 4 months or so. He then said this is an exception and I can dump this time, but basically said I am not welcome to come back and do it any more. He said that I put too much wear and tear on the machine. Really, in the past year, I have dumped there 4 times total, he was so rude.
I only dumped there because I wanted to pick up some coins in a different area, and that dump branch was near. I have 2 regular dump branches near me that I visit each twice a month and they have no problem at all with however much I want to dump. They are all so nice, so it was strange and discouraging that I was treated poorly at that one branch. I politely said I would not come back and I pulled all my money out of my account. I guess roll searchers bother some people and not others..

Ok, please don't take this advice as me being rude. If you take a large amount of coins anywhere and dump them and someone asks you why you have them- NEVER EVER tell them you collect coins. It just angers people. It's a trivial pursuit in their eyes and makes you look like a nuisance. I mean think about it- you just dump (for example) a hundred pounds of coins you never had any legitimate use for- and their staff has to handle your mess so you can sneak off. I mean that really does anger people. Say something like, "Oh, I run a business and I get a lot of change sometimes" or "I was just cleaning up my father's house"...
I know you were just being honest- but consider how it looks.

The vending business is by far the best excuse I have ever heard. I'm using that one for sure!

Yeah no offense taken. I just figured it wasn't that bad because The two brances I regularly dump at are awesome. I let them know before I made an account that I collect coins. They had no problem with it and they said they have tons of roll searchers that go there. They stated that most of them do half dollars though. they had no problem with me whatsoever. So I guess this is where I learned my lesson. The two branches I regularly go to I can tell the truth. All other branches I must lie to.
if you guys say you have a vending business, what do you tell your coin pick up banks? And also, I have been told that I would need a business account if I had a vending business, and that would cost. that's why I tell the truth...

You're lucky you atleast have a bank with a coin counter you can dump at. I have to re roll all my coins by hand because not a single bank in my area has a coin counter. I think it may have to do with the fact I live near the place Coinstar was founded haha

Sorry I got sidetracked..... A few banks I went to wouldn't "sell" me rolls because I didn't have an account, and they' all asked why an were very accusatory.

A roll searcher would get a very rough time from most banks in Australia. Circulation coins in Oz are bagged, not rolled. Just the same, if you said you wanted bulk coins just to search for the scarce ones, most banks in Oz wouldn't want to know you, and almost certainly would not want to supply to you, or take bulk coins back from you.
They would just see it as just wasting their time. No profit in it for THEM... ! I guess this trend of negative attitude against collectors may gather strength in the U.S. also.
There is a good side to collecting in Australia, though. The Royal Australian Mint uses almost every Post Office in Australia as a selling agent for their NCLT collector products.

I guess it depends on the bank and the people. Most banks around me don't care that I roll search. I went to one branch today and bought a box of nickels. The teller asked if I found anything good lately. I was caught off guard because I don't go to that bank too often and I didn't remember ever speaking to her so I didn't know she knew I collected coins. But yeah for the most part, all the banks I go to are super nice and usually ask how my searching is going. I think that's why I was a little offended today at that one dump bank, I guess only because I was not expecting that.

Some branches/tellers are just rude. There are a couple of banks I avoid because of this. Some are just the opposite. One teller actually said she had silver for me! However, even at the good ones, you can wear out your welcome.

Murr, don't feel too awful bad about it. THe banks are making a fortune off of us and pinching every penny that they can. Combine that with monster hunters searching and dumping $50k a week, some banks have had their fill of roll hunters. I myself search over 30 grand a year, a pittance compared to others. All of my banks know exactly what I a doing. Move your accounts around if you have to, find a bank that will accomodate your hobby and not give you too much grief. Good luck.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Quote: The vending business is by far the best excuse I have ever heard. I'm using that one for sure! I would be very careful using that. Most banks will immediately require you to get a business account which has a fee. I have already heard of a bank teller not allowing a vending person to use the free coin counter because that bank requires vending businesses to bring the coin in and for a fee will convert it to cash. I only say coin collecting and have never had any issues. I will never say it's business related.

The reason I give is my 8 year old son is doing a school project to look through coins and bring to school anything unusual that he finds. Playing the child card usually gets smiles from most tellers, and I am rarely refused rolls. Gives me an excuse to ask for CWR also because many of the machine rolls around here are all brand new, and I tell the tellers that in rolls of brand new coins there is nothing interesting for my son to find.
And I do have an 8 year old son, so I'm half telling the truth. The only problem is if the coin had a picture of Mario (Super Mario Brothers) on it he would be all about it. Other than that, he is unfortunately showing zero interest in coins...yet.

My main searching bank is BMO, and they are always nice. I just made an account with them anyway, just in case. Coppernickeldaddy, why don't you try showing your son those guitar and motorcycle shaped coins? -oddcoins
