In 2 more weeks there will be a coin show in my area. For the past couple of months I have been putting some money back knowing that this show would be coming up. Along with Morgans, SLQ's and Mercury dimes I have been working on a circulated set of Walking Libertys. I have been planning on looking for a 1921-D Walking Liberty in VG to Fine grade. I currently do not own any gold coins but lately I have been thinking about buying a gold coin instead of the walking liberty. With the price of gold now I do not know if this a good idea or not, or even where to start in the gold Coin World. Looking for some opinions on this, I will have around $600.00 saved up by the time the coin show gets here. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Which designs do you prefer? For $600, you could get both a Liberty and an Indian quarter eagle, or probably all 3 of the G$1, Type I, Type II and Type III, or either of the half eagles or possibly a circulated $3 Princess, and in a few cases, with a few bucks left over. Even Classic Head quarter eagles and half eagles would be in play.
Check out the designs and see if any are particularly interesting to you and go from there. Warning...you could be on your way to starting a gold type set.

The price of gold has gone up 11 years in a row. I see no reason for this trend to stop especially when "Helicopter Ben" is holding his finger down on the print button and diluting the currency more each day.

Rats ... I just closed the page I wrote to post. Here, I'll try again. I am partial to the $5.00 Indian half eagle http://www.coincommunity.com/us_gol...ian_head.aspI think it is a beautiful coin and you could probably find a reputable dealer to sell you an AU/MS example that is professionally graded in a certified top grader holder for that kind of money. There are fakes in fake holders to boot, so be careful. You are paying more than bullion values on these but if you get out your good magnifying glass and look at some and one just screams to you, I say it's a nice choice and you will always be glad you bought it. Of course you could get a modern .999 1/4 ounce gold piece and have some change to shop around for other things, but they are always going to be around. Check out this for a ballpark idea of which dates are more affordable in MS. http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...ices61.shtmlLet us know what you get!

I would agree with everything OneBowl said except I seriously doubt you could get all three type of gold dollar for $600 unless they were noticeably damaged. Type II gold dollars are NOT cheap. A well circulated piece would probably consume the whole $600. I think you would probably have troubles finding a $3 for $600 too but it MIGHT be possible.

Thanks everyone, been doing some reading and looking at pics and the Indian Head is growing on me, at first I didn't care for them. I also think the CAL. Gold Quarter Eagle would be a nice one to have. Some of those look like they would fit in my budget.

Our first coin was a $5 Indian. Well worth a peek if you are still on the fence. We chose that because of the unusual design and we kind of felt like we got the most gold for our money! Unfortunately we have not been able to add more to it but I am glad we have it.

I agree with the $5 Indian recommendation. Try to get a problem-free one with the original orangish look and not totally yellow.

Some of those look like they would fit in my budget The "Cal." quarter eagle was struck in 1848 only from about 230 ounces of California gold which produced 1,389 coins. In VF the Coin Dealer Newsletter shows the bid price is a mere $26,000.00. Ed ANA LM-3175

Your right Ed, I was reading about them in my RedBook and I misread the listing. I see now they were made only in 1848. They are probably a little out of my pricerange.

The color is all about originality. In many cases, yellow is a sign that the original surface has been stripped by a dip. That might not always be the case if the coin was protected from toning by being in the middle of a roll or bag. But the older the coin, the less that chance.

Good luck with whatever you decide to buy, but with TNG Quote: I think it is a beautiful coin and you could probably find a reputable dealer to sell you an AU/MS example that is professionally graded in a certified top grader holder for that kind of money. I like em all but have a couple of $2 1/2 Indians... So little time, so much to like, so few dollars.... Let us know after the show what you got.
