Just bought this coin. I searched high and low online, but couldn't find a coin with more screw ups and errors. So I got it. Double dies, alot of hub breaks. Couldn't figure out what type of obverse they have used though. The types don't really match up with the coin I got. I used this site: http://www.shieldnickels.net/hubs/obverseHubs.htmlCould there be a Shield nickel expert out here who might enlighten me on my new coin? thanks

Love them as a close realative of my favorite Longacre design the 2¢ piece. Here is the site you want to use to classify your new purchase; http://www.shieldnickels.net/Also Ed Fletcher has a great book out on Shield nickels, worth every penny if these catch your interest. That is one cool multi error nickel!

Looks like you have a repunched date and shift doubling in TRUST too! That's weird, I can't say that I have seen a (or any coin) that has that much detail missing in the legends. I have a "Chinese fake" that is missing a top of a letter, but not as much as yours. The details in the arrow feathers are not there...this may be a fake as well. I don't know about this one.

Awesome coin man. I do not think I have come across a coin with such obvious errors in a while.
I have no details as I am not a shield expert, nor a fan.
I do know you should hold on to this one. Maybe have it graded. That might give you more details regarding the piece.

I bought it from a coin dealer online whith a return policy, so if the weight or anything is off, I just return it. But he has a spotless reputation so I doubt he sells fake coins.
I'm not a general fan either, but I like this coin:P
will post some more pictures once I have it in my hands.

Looks like obv hub B but the die has been excessively polished almost removing the arrow shaft and the feathers above it.

I found it more amazing that someone in Sweden is collecting those. Starting to look like CCF is becoming a World wide coin club. I've got an Album for those and just can't get started since they are a bit on the difficult side to find.

I'm a Shield nickel fan! That's an interesting example you have pictured. I Started collecting them about a year ago and have been slowly filling in my collection. They seem to be a forgotten set. So far I have: 1866 1867 with rays 1867 without rays 1868 1869 1870 1872 1873 1875 1882 1883 ...... and will get the 1874 and 1876, then call it quits for the set. The proof only and ultra rare 1871 and 1877-1881 are out of my league. Once in a while an affordable 1871 appears so that may reappear on my want list. Unfortunately I don't know that much about varieties and error coins but just wanted to comment in the thread.

Keep an eye out on ebay and Amazon for a low price on Ed Fletchers book, that will really open your eyes to the number of varieties there are in the Shield series. I've seen a few copies sell in the $20 range lately, half of the original list price of $40.00.

got the coin today, and size and weight all matches up... A fun coin to own, but would be more fun the know the value as well. I would grade ir XF-45ish, but how do I estimate the value of the errors? Don't really want to put it on ebay just to see if there's a demand for error coins. A closer look revealed at least 11 errors just in the letters on the reverse. Crazy

I have a few. A very unloved series. The most unliked series behind 3CN. One of my favorites is this one:

Prethen, your 1871 is a beauty! Also very rare.
1871 mintage = 561,000.
