So I have never really set out to complete an entire set of coins before. I always just seemed to pickup whatever caught my eye at the time. That being said there is a part of me that really likes the idea of "completing" something in a hobby where I am not sure anything is ever "complete". I wanted to pick a series that wouldn't be impossible to complete and wouldn't consume all of my coin "budget". I have decided to complete a set of Ike dollars. Nice large beautiful coin. Not a huge number of years and mint marks to collect but the fact that they aren't found in pocket change anymore should make it challenging enough to be fun. Plus I already have a few to get me started we shall see how it goes. I always found it easier to stay focused on a goal when you share it with others.

After reading your first paragraph, the Ike $ was the first set I thought of and I think it is a great one to complete. There are quite a few Ike collectors, so you have great references here to use.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

And "complete" is whatever you decide "complete" is. Could be one of each year, one of each year/MM, or one of each year/MM/and every variety known to man! Good luck and have fun. I like Ikes!

You made the right call. For what it is worth, this is the first set I completed as well.

Check your local bank! Ask if they have any dollar or half-dollar rolls in their vault that you can buy; I've heard that banks have a hard time filling these rolls and will be happy to sell them off to you at-price.

Thanks ninamason, I wasn't sure how successful that would be but I figured that is where I would start. Glad to hear it may work better than I expected. I will keep you guys posted on the progress.

You are not the only person to bounce around picking up whatever caught your eye. I resemble that remark. I agree that the Ike dollar is an excellent series to complete. They look real impressive in a Dansco with all the holes filled. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Merc_Man, do you need a 1972P? I picked one up at work yesterday that's still got some luster and a little bit of cartwheel on it.

If you'd like it, give me a shout via e-mail! I'd be happy to send it your way and thrilled to know it filled a hole.

I was lucky and was able to find all of the Ike's, MM, Types clad and silver in BU condition. Takes awhile, particulary determing the types.
Also look for the man golfing on the moon. :)

I would love to make arrangements to acquire your Ike as finding them around here has been less successful than I had hoped. You can always e-mail me from my profile. Maybe I will have better luck today.

Merc Man try something current like Susan B's, Sacs, Ikes in a circulating set. I read somewhere that a circulating set of Peace dollars is dooable rather inexpensively. I would also recommend the current Presidential dollar because you can get good quality items out of circulation. The downside to them is starting this year you may have to get future coins from dealers and slightly higher than face value. Or you can get them from the mint in their circulating and mint sets. Another idea would to try and put together a date set which is to pick a year and get one coin of everything that was coined. You don't have to get the silver or gold coins of the year, just the regular coins that are in good shape. Just pick a year that you fancy for whatever reason, the birth you of you, your parents, or whatever.
