Minor correction:
The Cherrypicker's Guide doesn't just list the more "common" doubled dies. They list the most "popular" doubled dies, and some of them are extremely rare.
In percentages, the
Red Book lists under 5% of the known die varieties (contrary to my previous post). It's actually closer to 0.5%.
The Cherrypicker's Guide lists around 5% of the known die varieties.
The CONECA website lists about 75% of all known die varieties, but is inherently flawed in that there are no images...so while you can see that they exist, you cannot see what they look like.
For Lincoln cents, coppercoins.com lists about 80% of all known die varieties and has images of over 50%, making it the most comprehensive online resource for
Lincoln Cent die varieties.
I do intend on eventually opening the programming and image library of coppercoins to all series of
US coins on a different domain. A 10-15 year long project will include acquiring examples to shoot photos, and eventually housing a library of over a quarter million images of over 20,000 different US die varieties. I expect to complete this project around 2020...of course by then with different technology than we have now.
Good news to those who cannot wait, I will open the ongoing project to the public in 2008. It won't be anywhere near complete, but even a little is better than nothing at all, which is what we have out there now.
