Hi new to the forum. Looking through my pennies this morning and found this 1959 penny that looks barely circulated. Hopefully this picture works. It is shiny also. It has a D under the date.

Nice coin & Welcome to the community. Just some advice from someone who's been there. I kept by first 1959 penny instead of spending it (You could buy things for a penny in 1959)and got hooked on collecting.

You've got a great start for a LMC collection. Good Luck and we hope to hear from you often.

This 1959 Denver minted Cent is worth exactly that...... One Cent.
Even in uncirculated condition.
But, as noted, this will be a great start to a Set you could begin building from circulation.
And 1959 is the perfect place/year to start this Set !
It's the first year of the Lincoln Memorial cent.
You should go down to your nearest bookstore and go to the "coin section". (have an employee point you in the right direction) All bookstores will have them. In this section are coin folders & albums for EVERY denomination of coin that exists, just about !
Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Kennedy halves, Native Dollars (Sacagawea's), Presidential dollars.
They'll have folders and albums for ALL OF THESE.
You can also get older Classic albums here for Morgan silver dollars, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Wheat Cents, Ike dollars, Peace dollars.
You can also pick up the 2012 RedBook of U.S. coins too, this is every coin collectors "bible".
All kinds of good information in there......

But just starting cheaply and easily with the first coin you found, you should buy the Lincoln Cent album that starts in 1959 to present date, and begin filling those holes ! It's so much fun ! You'll get addicted so quickly.

Nice find. Did you check the rear to see if it is a Wheat Back. If so, worth a fortune. Still really nice condition for a coin that old. If your going to start coin collecting, your now off to a great start.

No...no wheat :)

My dad had a lot of old coins and my brother sold them for cheap. Now I'm starting up again. My dad did give me a 1857 Flying Eagle penny. So that was my start.

Edited to fix date of flying eagle.

Thank you all for your replies and welcome.

I've looked through some more today and found another 1959 penny much darker then the first one I found...the one pictured above I believe is a red one.

I disagree. The copper alone is worth more than 2 cents!

One of my favorite sets is my Lincoln mememorial set. I have been searching penny rolls and pocket change for over a year and I am still looking for dates I do not have. Fun, challenging, and affordable:)

I wish I had your 59 for my set. It is really nice!

When you go to the store get yourself two things. A folder for your coins, and a whitman official " Red Book". The 'Red Book" book has been invaluable to me.
