I finally found a girl of my dreams!

Coins-Of-San-Marino

The whole 1981 series looks, mildly put, interesting (I guess a certain Grilli had his hand at that)

I find myself somewhat attracted to San Marino coins; definitely it wouldn't be a boring collection.

Anybody else has coins from this country to share?

Hope you noticed that your 200 lira coin is a FAO coin.

It was part of a world wide issue to celebrate the first World Food Day October 16, 1981

Yes, I did notice that, and I was surprised that only one coin out of the issue was FAO, not all/most.

San Marino did in fact issue three other FAO coins in 1981 for world food day .

They were each gold coins

1 Scudo KM128
2 Scudi KM129
5 Scudi KM130.

Unfortunately I needed some cash a couple of years ago and had to sell my set so I cannot post pictures

Actually the entire coin set from 1981 (8 lire coins, 3 scudi pieces) was dedicated to the World Food Day, hence the food and nutrition related designs. My favorite set from San Marino, and one that I have, is the 1983 set about the threat of a nuclear war. Here is an image of the 1 lira coin: http://www.gcoins.net/en/catalog/view/36961

Most of my coins from SM are euro issues though. And, I have already been to San Marino. :)

I was in charge of the FAO coin programme between 1995 and 2008 and although 1981 was before my time I do not have any information that the other coins were part of the World Food Day set. I wwould be grateful if you could let me have the source of this information

Those are really nice. It's an interesting country to collect. I think they were circulating but there are probably more around in sets than did circulate. I have a couple of those inexpensive sets from the early 70's - I'll try and get a photo uploaded.

Gerhard Schön, author of the "Weltmünzkatalog", a German-language catalog of 20-21c world coins. I have the 2011 edition; on page 1931 it says "FAO Welternährungstag 1981 - 1. Ausgabe (9)". That is "FAO World Food Day 1981, First Series (9 coins)". It then lists the nine coins that svslav posted here. A few catalog numbers later comes part two (2. Ausgabe), with the scudo coins you mentioned.

The way I understand this is: San Marino used all twelve pieces with a food or nutrition theme as a reference to the 1981 World Food Day. Only one of these, however, is actually a FAO coin and says so ...

I only have the 2007 version of this catalog and it does in fact show these coins under the heading FAO. However it also shows many other coins under the same heading FAO which are not FAO coins. For example in the series of 1994 on page 1581 it shows the 200, 500, and 1000 lira coins as FAO where in fact only the 200 lira is an FAO coin.

Additionally on page 1582 it shows the 500 and 1000 lira coins as FAO 50th anniversary coins whereas only the 500 lira was.

There are many more examples of errors in this catalog as regards FAO coins (not limited to San Marino).

Sorry to be so pedantic but unverified entries in catalogs cause confusion to say the least.

Maybe the publishing house needs to use different fonts, or at least font sizes, for "headlines" and "sublines". :) Or maybe San Marino is a special "problem" as they used to issue those annual sets in the lira years ... What I mean is this:

The 1994 "circulation" coin series has the common theme of the "Life and Legend of Saint Marinus". That headline applies to ten coins, from 1 lira to 1000 lire. Above the 200 lire you see the text "FAO"; that means the 200 lire coin is a FAO piece. If Gerhard Schön had wanted to say that the L.500 and L.1000 coins were FAO issues too, he would have written "FAO (3)", to indicate three issues.

Same thing for the 1995 series: The whole set has the theme "Civil responsibility/obligation for the third millennium" (my on-the-fly translation from German), and abve the L.500 coin you see "50 Jahre FAO". Had the L.1000 coin been issued as a FAO coin too, the sub-header would say "50 Jahre FAO (2)".

It is a little complicated, and I do think that more typographic variety could help clarifying this. :)

I think Gerhard is wrong on this one -
here are the official descriptions from the book accompanying the mint set - no mention of FAO in connection with anything other than the 200 Lire.
The theme for these is stated as "theme of peace"

Thanks for the scanned pages, Andy! Yes, a clarification would make sense - will you contact Gerhard Schön, or shall I do it? I mean, he already lists both of us anyway ... ;)

Thanks for all sorts of info!

Unfortunately I don't have any more complete sets, just some coins here and there.
Here are a few from 1984 which apparently were dedicated to famous people of science:

Those San Marino coins are fun to collect!
(Until that is you try to find the coins issued in the late 1990's up to the advent of the Euro, which for some reason are far more expensive than the earlier pieces)
