I recently came across this penny and don't have a clue what it is. It is the same size and thickness as a regular penny so I do not think it was stamped in a dime blank. It is not thick or large enough to be stamped in a nickel blank. The penny has a beautiful silver shine to it and looks nearly new. So not being a coin collector myself I ask you the experts. What in the world is this and what is it worth?

By the LOOKS of it, I would agree.

However, what would be the least damaging test to prove that it indeed plated?

A light scratch on the edge would show the copper underneath. On plated quarters I usually use a razor blade on a reeded area of the edge. You might also check the gutter near the rim. They usually show copper there if there was any debris on the coin before it was plated.

probably rub the edge on something to see if the plating goes away and you start seeing copper

Either weight or Specific Gravity measurement would be completely non-destructive. A plated coin should have a weight within the planchet's tolerance since electroplating adds a negligible amount of metal.

I found a 1950 s that was plated the other day. It was horribly worn under the plating. Made me laugh a bit. Someone's science project. You can also turn them "gold"

Is your penny slightly magnetic? If so, you have an error
