First off, TGIF, of course. Secondly, I went to my local BofA branch to dump some coins at lunch today and, as usual, I asked for any halves they may have laying around. I got only two this time, but one was a 1968P. It's the little things sometimes. And if only every investment I made were as profitable...

Indeed they are. I love spending 50 cents and making 4 dollars.

Reverse inflation!
In all seriousness, though, are those particularly hard to find? I get a lot of 50c pieces at work, but I've only ever found one silver (which subsequently came up missing . . . *grr*). Low mintage, hoarders, both, other?

Nina: If you're going to start looking at Kennedy halves you want to look for: = any 1970 and before. '64 is 90% silver and the rest is 40% silver = "S" mintmarks. They are either 90% silver or clad in either case they're not normally found in circulation ever. It probably means that some kid got into their parents collection. = I believe that anything 2002 and later are called NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation) Halves were not circulated by the mint since 2002. There are some dates that are scarcer than others, you'd have to check that out. Other than this it's simple. = Anything that still looks good

. . . . now I wish I'd held onto that bunch I got about four months ago when all our snowbirds were here. I turned my nose up at them because they were all from between 2003 and 2006 and therefore not silver, and there were seven or eight of them. BRB, beating my head against a wall!! In the meantime . . . if I find such a thing again, I'll certainly know who to offer it to!

...not as big of a loss if they would have been SILVER! BTW, who is going to pay for the damage to the wall that you inflicted? Back to the great silver search!

HEY! Are you saying I'm hardheaded? Silver I knew about (and buy out of the drawer whenever I get my happy little hands on it), but . . . Also, can't you use the P just to designate that it isn't D or S? in years when there was no P, I mean. I assumed that's how the original poster was using it.

I've been finding quite a few 40% halves lately. Apparently, the silver scrappers (and tellers for that matter) don't even know enough about coins to keep them!

Not bad, paying 50 cents for a silver kennedy is always a good move.

Since I started collecting seriously last year, this is my second 40% half (both were '68Ps) that I've found in the wild, both from bank tellers. It's funny, you know. You can just *tell* from across the room when they are looking at the drawers... "hhmmmm... /that/ half has a different appearance..." I'm sure security looked at me a bit oddly when I did the pepper dance in the lobby.

I realize that my recent 40% finds are highly unusual, but in the past week I found a total of a roll of them. It was both very pleasing and yet I knew that a lot of people out there either don't know about the 40%ers or are spending their hordes to make ends meet.
In any event this past week went towards bringing down my DCA (dollar cost average) to a level that is more respectable than it was but not near where it should be.
