i was out detecting today in an abandon army depot from the 40's hoping to find some coin. I couldnt even find trash. I did few a items immediatley at the giant water tower as this is a magnet for teenagers.

i suppose one of them lost these knives. they were both in the same hole.

one is the minaiature swiss army knife that has a slide out toothpick and tweezer, the other I'm not sure

Sucessful?-2nd-Dig--Weird-Item

i also found a really weird rock. the rock is NOT magnetic, was detected by my machine so I know its metal, and is about three times heavier than you would expect it to be.

its hard to tell from the pics but this thing blings like its made of chrome or something. zero oxidation, just some mud.

does anyone have an idea what the heck this could be?

as you can see from the pics this is not a peice of metal broken off of something manufactured or discarded.

check out this video to get a better view of the color.

I agree .... Iron Pyrite which is also known as "fools gold"
That is a super example of it. Look on ebay here at this link for this mineral.

after researching pics of pyrite and galena I have to say its most likely galena, a lead type mineral.
it looks very similiar to the second pic on this ebay listing

Galena, neat stuff too. I guess weight would tell which it is. Specific gravity test.
Galena is heavier than Pyrite it appears on this webpage.

I am 99.99% sure that this is Galena.
There is an old mine about 80 miles north of me and there are bits of this stuff all over the place.
I think it is mainly lead but has some silver in it as well.
The old mine is called Galena by the way

Scrape a little piece off the surface. If the stuff underneath ia a golden color it iron pyrites (pyrite). If it is a dark metallic gray color it is galena, which is the principal ore of sliver and lead.

Both have the same cubic blocky, dense, massive presentation.

It looks man cut. What kind of place was it. What were major supplies that were shipped in that area. Could also be lead

The larger pocket knife looks like a Chicago Cutlery L36 or L33. But I suppose there were other companies making similar designs. Anyway, if it was in perfect condition with its original case it would be worth all of $15 or $20.

It's probably stainless steel, so I'd throw it in the scrap metal bucket to take to scrap dealer.

Now that rock --- gorgeous!

Similar to Sel's suggestion; scrap it along a white tile (preferably a slightly rough tile)(preferably not the most visible one in the bathroom... Imagine your mrs ) If the streak it gold it is pyrite, if it is grey its galena. My money is on pyrite but its so hard to tell.

i tried scraping the chrome rock with a knife point but I could barely even leave a tiny scratch like a swirl mark on a car that was only visible from an angle in the light.

when I put my new super high powered jewelers rare earth magnet it just barely sticks. This magnet is so powerful it will pull a paper clip from off the desk from about 6 inches.

i highly recommend buy a magnet to aid in the digging part of the hunt. My magnet is 1/2 inch wide 1/8th thick and 2 inches long but has a 28 lb pull. If there is iron in that hole this magnet will find it.
