Hi all,
Newbie here to the world of collecting coins/banknotes.
Still at the point of trying to grade and value dads collection.
I have very old german banknotes...old coins from germany and austria....as well coins that come from Spain, Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia, Czech, CCCP, etc etc...
Where the heck do I find one good reference site to see if any of these are worth keeping in a collection or should go to a bank to exchange out and rid the collection of any non valuable items?
Help?

Ok, wait...this isn't going to help me. I need something that tells me value.
I've been beating around the bush so I'm just going to come out with it...I need serious help.
6 years ago, the Government of Canada made a mistake that hurt my business and my credibility...when it was pointed to them it was a mistake...they contrived evidence to cover their butt.
It hurt me and my partners even more because they were essentially saying we were criminals.
It took until June 2010 with the help of independent scientists and ATI files for the government to 'quietly' admit to us and our lawyers that they had made up what they had done but followed that with 'we expect to see your net loss evaluation forwarded to us'...
It's taken our accounting firm one and a half years to complete this at a cost of 36,000 of which 20 has been paid. We have lost everything to keep going during this time and even worse, we are two months away from our 6 year statute of limitations...and short of cash to finish this.
Even worse, there is no money for the mortgage(s) payments on this property due next month...we are essentially going to loose everything including our reputations.
Even even worse, both my parents died last year, badly. They had no insurance. Their home in bad shape. I've had to borrow money just to bury them.
I need to find cash, somewhere somehow and despite how damned desperate I sound I won't give up. There must be something here in dad's collection that is worth something and don't ask me why I know this, I don't but it's a gut feeling.
I need some place I can go on line to evaluate what I have in front of me.
Thanks for reading and understanding why I'm so mercenary about all of this.

122 people have read but not one has a reference source...I'm not asking for money...I'm asking collector experts for something I can use as a tool to save my own butt.
But I suppose it's much like everything else I've learned these past few years...tell people whats happened to you and you need help, they'll just call you a witch because innocent people don't say jack squat...they just fall to the bottom of the lake with rocks in their pockets.
Yeah, I'm frustrated.

What you are asking for does not really exist as a free website. The standard reference for world coin and banknotes values are the Krause catalogs consisting of multiple volumes but a full set will run several hundred dollars. However, they also operate a website that compiles all of the catalog info but it is a subscription site. The good news is that you can sign up for one month access for $12.95(one year subscription is $79.95) and right now you can get an additional month's access for free with the promo code "FREE". Of course, you will need to provide a credit card # to sign up but monthly auto-renew is optional so you do not have to worry about signing up and then cancelling the subscription after the two months is up. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/insid...Guides&@mc=1

carvers_bench - I am sorry for your loss and for your current problems. The reason so many have looked at your post and not replied is that the title to the topic isn't specific and you are getting people like me dropping by. I have no idea where you can find the information you need. I am only learning about US coins. biokemist6 has been a valuable resource for a lot of us here so you should follow his suggestion. I would add that you might get to view it for free at a public library....maybe. It's worth trying. If you have a large collection, you could try sending a photos to a company that does auctions. You can find them on the net. Make sure they deal with coins and banknotes. They should have an expert that will give you an idea. Good luck and I hope things improve for you soon.

Thanks to the above two...getting answers is better than being ignored. I can't handle that anymore.
To Biokemist, thanks for the info...no credit card and there's nothing I've been doing in the past few years that hasn't had to be 'cash'.
To Buddy, thanks for letting me know that I'm asking for something that isn't possible, again I'd rather have the truth than folks just not responding.
So with that, I'll put this all away and try to find another solution.

Quote: 122 people have read but not one has a reference source Be patient. There are people here who can help. If you want free online information you can try: NGC: http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspxWorld coin gallery: http://www.(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed / They have limited pictures, but they also have values. I think that both get their prices from the Standard Catalog of World Coins (also available at Numismaster) which is the most common reference used by world coin collectors: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...%2Caps%2C128While not the best price guide, it is very comprehensive. Older additions can usually be bought for small money and your local library may also keep copies on their shelves. You could also reference the coins at retail sites like MA-Shops: http://www.ma-shops.com/Their prices are usually high-retail, but you still can get a good ballpark figure. Finally you could post the coins on CCF and people here would be glad to help identify and assign values to your coins.

All I can offer for help, is to tell you to post pics of the coins/currency in the correct forum and have members help you out by looking up the values in the Krause catalogs

Check completed ebay auctions for the coins...it'll give you an idea what they sell (or dont) for.

Please be more specific in what you have. I collect Spanish coins and would be happy to tell you what your coins are worth but you need to tell me (and ideally post pictures) so I know what you have. "Coins from Spain" could be worth scrap metal value and could be worth hundreds of dollars. Were these coins gathered from travel abroad (unlikely to be valuable) or collected by a numismatist with an eye for rarity and value? You need to provide more information in order to get the answers you want.

Be warned though that when you say "very old German banknotes" that probably means the inflation money from the 1920's. Even though these may say 20,000 or even 20 million marks - in reality they are worth very little - even in uncirculated condition.

, carvers_bench! Your question is like "I have a coin. It's round. What's it worth." If your liberry doesn't have the std cat, they can get it on loan. Most of your paper money has collector value only. Many countries change their negotiable currency every 10-20 years, so the old stuff is no longer spendable.
