One is the coin that was already in my book - and one is a coin that I've recently bought and am considering placing into the slot. Which one would you choose? 1883 1884

I like to colors (blue on the 1883, golden on the 1884) of both, the rim crack on the 1883 and the abrasion on the reverse is pushing the 1884 higher up on the scale...IMO.

If it were me I'd go with the 1884 mostly because of the detail in the hair and face.

Yep, really like the localized toning of the '84.

I would give up on the 7070 and start collecting Seated dimes.

IMO, hands down, the 1884 for overall grade. BUT, the 1883 looks better from the obverse and may be better in the 7070. However, both are AWESOME coins! You should be proud to own both of them!

LOL @ CaptainFwiffo. I've definitely thought about Seated dimes before.. But man, there are some tough keys in that series.

I thought the 1883 for sure. I just think the eye appeal is IMO: BA BOOM!

I'm with you w1a9c8k5. The 1883 is more attractive imo on the obverse, and the toning looks more natural and vibrant to me. The 1884 obverse is very attractive too, but I think the toning occurred over a light dip at some point. I also like the obverse luster on the 1883 better.
The reverse on the 1884 has stronger detail and is a bit more vibrant, but the spotting kind of counteracts the advantage.
1883 for the win imho. It really boils down to which one YOU like better though. I would try them both in the 7070 and see which one looks better with the unit.

By that I mean either all the same type of coin or a few I've made like a Liberty Head/Indian Head/Jefferson Nickel Album in one binder.

That's basically what happened to me with Mercury dimes. I got one high grade one with the intention of having it in a type set, then I got another I thought looked really nice too, and then it was pretty much over for me.

I have that problem too, even when the new one is clearly superior, sometimes the old one is still a great coin! I had my old '24-S, which is just a perfect XF with circulation cameo: But I saw this AU one at a coin shop, underpriced, and had to have it (looks much better in hand): I wanted to keep the original too, but there's not two '24-S slots. I have other holes to fill; that '24-S could go toward a nice '28-D or '25-S, or toward several less difficult dates.
