I was surfing ebay for florins until I came across an interesting specimen a 1915 florin which looks like a beauty but has a mysterious "shiny golden tone". So I compared it to one I managed to find on the internet from Jaggards and the ebay one looks like the biggest fake. The florins "star" instead of being risen is completly flat.

The fake: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1915-Georgi...em35bbd86f94

The real:http://www.jaggards.com.au/shop/vie...categoryid=3

So I thought are these fake florins just as obvious or are there some out there which are actually very very good fakes? Also just wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on being able to tell fake florins from real ones?

if you scroll down seller has stated that the coin is 8 grams instead of 11 grams --> would have to suggest that this is the seller's "this is a copy" safe-cover to protect themselves.

Anyone seeing the weights would be foolish to think that the coin is original

I sent the seller this question:
Quote:
Are you aware that this coin is a counterfeit?
His Reply:
Quote:
I was told and and revised to what I been told " Weight is 8.78 gram, orig. florin weighs 11.2 gram " I although emailed the bidders and the highest bidder retracted. I still don't know exactly what it is made off but can't do much more.
I will tell the winner though, if there is another higher bidder and cancel if they want too.
Thanks for the message and believe me I won't risk my perfect feedback
In the light of that, it seems that he is at least honest in his dealings, consequently he is not on my ebay 'germ' list.

life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

To answer the original question "How dumb can counterfeiters be?"
The answer is: they only need to be a little less dumb than the morons who buy their dross.
