For those of us who love old copper but are on a budget it's always a tough when making buying decisions. Here's a good example as I bought the first coin that is low grade but doesn't have any corrosion. Then I bought the second coin which has much better details but has corrosion on the reverse. I'd appreciate your opinions regarding the comparison of these coins - grading and values. Hmmmm... or maybe I should sell both coins and buy a single coin of better quality. Quote: maybe I should sell both coins and buy a single coin of better quality. Sounds like a plan to me. I am more partial to problem free coins rather than corroded and scratched. It's a tie for me on which one to keep, but I lean toward the weaker detailed one on top because it looks so natural. However I certainly can't knock either of them as they beat the pants off mine. THIS IS MINE - it fills my type set hole.

That's a tough one. I think as a type coin, i'd go for the second example - because of how much detail you get out of it. And most of the problems appear to be on the reverse. But, if you are collecting a set, i'd probably choose the first one to keep the whole set problem free if possible. I wouldnt turn away either of them though :)

I'd sell both and try to find a better one. Even decent '95's aren't too expensive (well, really decent, both of these are decent enough!). Let me see what I can do to find some for you to look at.

Tough call. I'm in the "sell them both and buy a better one" camp.

Does either one have edge lettering? I don't think the first one does but it looks like the second one might. If it does then keep that one. Both coins are S-76. S-76 comes both with and without edge lettering. The 76b plain edge is common. The 76a lettered edge is rare, R-5 fewer than 75 known.

I would sell 'em both for a better one. All three of the ones above beat the one that I don't have.

The 1st one is not a problem free coin either- cleaned and looks like it could have light corrosion itself. I like the 2nd one better because of teh obverse details. Since they both have problems, the better detailed coin (2nd one) is what I'd keep. However, I do like the idea that you sell both pieces and use that $$ plus a little extra to buy a problem-free example.

Even with the corrosion, I would take the second one personally...better detail, better eye-appeal IMO. We are in the same boat cipster, Large Cents on a budget with me too...in the process of buying a home so right now, pennies count :)

I like the second one because the obverse is nice and that is what I see mostly in my albums!

Thanks for your feedback and your opinions. I do like the 2nd one better and that's why I bought it, but the corrosion is a bit troubling. The idea of selling both to buy a better one makes sense.
