Here are a few finds from a 1973-D mint bag. There are 3 coins here - cracked obverse (2 photos), struck thru(?) obverse with something on the reverse as well (3 photos), and a soft obverse one (soft 1 and 3 in date, nearly missing ear, soft portrait - 1 photo). I found 10 of the last one - and many characteristics match the more extreme struck through one where you can hardly see the date. Could this be some kind of progression? Of what?

The first two photos are lamination errors and the rest look like Struck Through Grease. They are all nice finds.

Could be oil or water. Looks like some movement during the strike.

Pretty cool finds.

It would be great to know how you got a hold of a mint bag.

I bought this one at my local coin shop, but all the others I have bought on ebay. There are typically a number of mint bag auctions up at any given time, mostly the small $25 State Quarter mint bags, but frequently Lincoln Cent bags, SBA bags, and Kennedy half bags. You used to be able to get these $50 penny bags from banks at face value (I have been told), but the mint doesn't issue them anymore, except the "special" ones for collectors (at a "special" price!).

The mint stopped sewing $50 bags of cents in 2001. Starting in 2002 cents were only issued in Ballistic Bags with (I believe) $4,000 face in them.

Mint sewn bags of lesser popular years are still available at under $100 per bag, but a number of them have gone above that amount.

I was just looking at a mint sewn bag of 1970-S on ebay for a buy-it-now price of 1500 bucks.

1972-P bags on ebay have sold in the past 6 months for between $700 and $1100. I have only seen one 1970-S bag sell on ebay and it sold for $700.
