I picked up this 1859 as part of a bulk lot. I don;t have much experience with US coins but I am thinking this is quite a nice find.

The colour is a nice fresh uncleaned brass in hand. The photo makes the colour look a little unnatural but it isn't. Thanks for any opinions!

Smallcentguy, can you enlarge your pics so, we can give you a grade on your coin.

Nice find though.

Depending on how much you paid for that lot, it is a GREAT find!

I think it grades AU at least.

I bought a group of lots in an auction. This lot I am happy to say cost me $300 and included 6 silver dollars, a few halves, other small silver, about 50 large cents (including two very poor 1803s), about 25 Indian Head cents (this one plus three other brass ones, a Flying Eagle cent, plus a variety of other odds and ends. I think I paid about 25 cents on the dollar for it, maybe less.

I find these CuNi IHCs hard to grade by photos alone--do both sides have similar luster?
With AU details at least. Nice examples from 1859 are hard to find; one graded AU should be worth at least $200.

Nice looking coin! I don't see any serious traces of wear on it. At least AU details, possibly MS. Possibly original. As others have said, may be worth getting him graded by a TPG.

Terrific find. I am such a newbie that I won't attempt to suggest a grade but I do know to look for 'Liberty' and the diamonds in the ribbon and you have both! Yea!

Now I want a bulk lot, too! LOL

Many thanks all. I am north of the border and it is a bit of a pain to send things to PCGS but I think I will send this one in. I am pretty sure it is not cleaned and has a little remaining lustre. I owuld be happy at AU but if it came in higher it would be a complete home run.

The bulk lot was sold at a small general auction up here in Canada. There aren't many US collectors here and the auction was mainly (and sparsely) attended by people looking for cheap bulk silver. This lot went for more than silver value so there wasn't much interest in it.
