On Monday I went and got 10 dollars worth of pennies from the bank because the wife is out of town and I figured it would give me something to do. I went though the pennies in a day. Now I am not sure if I want to ever see a penny again in my life. I look at them all the time but I never realized how small they were. That lettering is even smaller. Why any one does this for fun is hard to say. I found a 1946 S Wheat cent, five Canadian cents (one is a George VI in good shape) and one penny that looks like it was punched slightly off center as the rim is wide on one side and smaller on the other side. I had $4 worth of copper I saved for what ever reason. Mostly since I was going through the rolls I figured I might as well. I may keep it or try selling it on craigslist when I get a sizeable amount. Did not find any zinc cents really worth saving. A few looked really nice but on closer examination had blemishes in them. I set aside all the 1983 cents until I get a scale, just in case there is a copper cent in them. No CAM's or WAM's. Was not expecting the world but have a new found respect for people who do this a lot. Probably be a while before I attempt to do it again.

LOL! Thanks for the post. Nice finds. It takes me 3-4 days to go through $25 of pennies, and yea, my eyes get pretty tired too.
Just a quick note: You said you were saving '83s to check for coppers. I don't claim to be an expert, but I'm pretty sure there are no copper 1983s because the mint changed to Zinc part way through 1982 (unless you are looking for errors?).

you should weigh the 82's not the 83's. Like Mad said, they switched mid year of 82.

A 1983 cent has been found on a Copper Planchet. That is why you weigh all 83's." Strike It Rich with Pocket Change." 3rd Edition pg. 75. Talk about a big variety. Estimated value $15,000+ You weigh the 82's to tell if copper or zinc. I'm sure there are other post about this variety.

Yes, I should have clarified.
I set aside the 1982's and the 1983's. The 1982's because some are copper and some are zinc. I set aside the 1983's because of the Copper one that was found. I think I read something one here on the forum but I can't find it now.

@bpoc1: Thanks! I thought I read somewhere that some 1983 coppers were made in error, and was wondering if that was what he was hunting for by saving his '83s to weigh.

I feel strange compared to you all. I did $40 worth of pennies in half a day. I was sick of the color of copper for the next month. :P

I find searching through coins really relaxing and I have to make myself stop.
I don't ever expect to find a really valuable coin. But I get ridiculously happy when I find old coins.
This week I found a 1940 cent in my husband's pocket change and I was delighted. I could easily buy one, but FINDING one is just more fun.

I love roll hunting pennies. I wish I had better eyes but my 5x helps. I'm going to try and put together a wheat album with my finds. As much as I can anyways. (500)

The existence of 1983 copper cents can be explained the same way that the existence of 1943 copper cents and 1944 steel cents can be explained. A few stray leftover blanks from before the transition could conceivably have gotten stuck in the massive bins used by the mint to shuttle coin blanks to the presses. The 1983 copper cents are excessively rare, and the 15k value is reasonable considering the rarity. I weigh ALL of the 1983 cents that I go through from bank rolls!

@ coppernickeldaddy I didn't know that there were solid copper 1983's. I'm checking all my 1983's next time I roll hunt pennies. @allranger Proper lighting and a magnifying glass can really help make eyestrain less severe. Also nice job on your finds! Especially the wheat and the George VI.
