So I decided that I would really start getting serious about CRH. I really enjoy pennies and nickels. I belong to a credit union with only one branch. I thought I would open an account with a regional hometown bank with several branches. I decided I would be upfront with the new accounts teller asking questions such as:

Would it be a problem if I ordered several boxes of pennies a month? No problem, as long as it doesn't become several a week.

Is there any fees for ordering boxes? Nope

Do they have any boxes of pennies I could buy today? Absolutely, in fact the teller told me she had a couple at her window at this moment.

Great, sign me up! After I opened up the account, I asked if I could buy those boxes of pennies. She said sure. I also mentioned that this will keep my kids out of my wife's hair since they are now off for the summer.

The teller asked, "How so?"

I said it will take them quite a while to sort 5000 pennies by date.

Her response, "I don't think I can help you. They are all 2012 pennies."

GRRRR!

Not wanting to make it a total loss, I thought I might pick up some silver with some half-dollars. I asked her if she had any half dollar rolls. Yes she did, but just seven. So I bought all seven and picked up thirty dollar coins as well.

So this afternoon, I sorted through all 140 half dollars. No silver. Looks like they were part of someone's dump. Lots of 1971s, a ton of 1976s, the rest were mostly from the 1990s.

Oh well, I picked out the best of each year to start a half dollar collection. Next I will look through for 72Ds with no FG and 71D, 72P, 73D and 74Ds for DDO.

When the teller gives you lemons, time to make lemonade!

Thank you for the encouraging words, M0nks. Tomorrow I will try another branch and see what happens.

I have a bank with many branches in town - I try to visit different branches from week to week so as not to wear out my welcome too much and to try to get some variety in the coins I get. I get small dollars and halves mostly, and in searching I look for whatever might be interesting - filling out a type set, looking for error coins, looking for silver, etc. Then I dump at a branch near me that has an automatic coin counter. They don't seem to mind seeing me come in every Saturday with $1,000 worth of dollars and halves. That's a great thing about CRH - you get to look for free!

If you do want to focus mostly on cents and nickels (I do exclusively cents at the moment, but was heavy into nickels for awhile) here is what I do: I go to every bank I can, even ones I don't have an account. I never ask for more than $10 in cents at a time. Even if you don't have an account most banks are happy to part with that small an amount, as long as you don't wear out your welcome. I try not to go to any one branch more than once every two weeks. However I have the luxury, due to my work causing me to travel around my area a lot, of having access to something like 200-300 banks during any given week. Keep your coin purchases small, and practically every bank will help you. If a bank happens to hand you solid rolls of new coin, nicely explain what you are doing, and most should be happy to check other tellers or look in the vault to find you customer rolls. If not, make a note of that bank, and don't go there again.

Thanks for the advise coppernickeldaddy. I commute around 110 a day, so visiting differenty banks along the way may be a great idea. I have also started asking the cashiers at the stores I shop for $1 in pennies every time I visit. So far most don't mind parting with two rolls and I am hoping it adds some variety to the coins I search through.

Keep a notebook with you, and make a small note of what rolls were bought where. If you happen to hit a "goldmine" roll, that way you will know where to go back to to try to buy as many rolls as they will spare, in the hope of getting more great rolls!
