Hi all, I am very new to coin collecting and have been reading the posts here for a couple months. I am hoping that someone here can help me. I found this coin in a package I bought over the internet. Is this an error? or do you think that this was done post mint?

Welcome, shalena. Nice of you to decide to start posting, and I'm glad you found Coin Community worth the commitment.

Unfortunately, it's almost a foregone conclusion that your coin has been ground down post-mint. The striations from the grinding are plainly visible on what used to be the reverse. It looks like it was done some time ago.

Now there is a chance that it could be in the planchet however with out coin in hand to view or a better pic. ( has nothing to w/ your photo, I cant do any better) also there would at least show some rim detail I would belive since it shows the full strike on the Obverse, so considering all of that I would have to agree with SuperDave

I haven't really decided yet. I have bought a variety of coins and am really enjoying just looking them over, and generally learning about them. I think that the Indian Head cents and the Mercury dimes are my favorite so far.

welcome shalena. I am one of those Mercury dime fanatics. I really like the simple but artistic design all rolled up in one little silver package. I hope you enjoy your stay here

I agree as well...ground down. If it were struck that way it wouldn't have a perfectly flat reverse.

Thanks! I completely agree Irishraider - the design on the Mercury dimes is elegant and beautiful. All the more so because of the simplicity.

Shalena, I would suggest purchasing a Red Book Guide to US coins if you are planning on collecting US coins. There is a lot of information and pictures and it might help you decide which issues really interest you.

We also have a Coin Histories, Coin Facts, and a Commemorative Histories section. Take a look and see if that helps you out at all.

We also have Image Galleries for our members and also some informational sections there.

I hope you enjoy it here!
