Hi all
Have spent the last week going through 5c, 20c and 50c coins from the local bank here in Eastern Melbourne, Vic. and here's the results.
Being a rather slow typist- a hunt and peck of the first order....I'll just do the 5c first, as they don't have any commems. and will do the 20s and 50s shortly. The Canadian F1 GP doesn't start till 4AM here, so I've a bit of time spare!!

5 cents Total searched = 1200 coins

5 NZ coins found (1972, 1980, 1982, 1989, 2000)

1195 Aussie coins being made up of:

1966 x4
1967 x7
1968 x4
1969 x1
1970 x5

2008 x116
2009 x58

2011 x1

All coins from Chubb paper rolls 3 x$20 lots
I read somewhere else on the forum the lack of 1960's and 1970's coins circulating for the 5 cent, and I'd agree with that. The 1972 was OK condition; I'd have thought they'd be all noodled out by now...! Nothing else really, no mis-strikes, upsets, or 2007 double-headers...

Your 50c find that stands out to me is the 3 x 1993. That's not too bad at all. I don't often noodle 50c pieces, but when I have, I've only ever found the one.

Did you check your 50c 1994 for wide dates?

This confirms my thoughts that the 2011 Volunteer 20c is rare in Melbourne. From what I've heard though it is more common in other states.

The volunteers 2011 20c has onfected Adelaide's 20c stocks like a plague what an ugly coin!

Yep, happy to have noodled a couple of 1993's in the 50c, though one of the 3 has edge damage....no I didn't differentiate between the 1970 Cooks, wide 1994's (nor double bar 79/80's) All the 1979/80 and 1994 coins were pretty much used; there were hardly any pre 1979 coins in even passable condition. Some 1977 Jubies/81 Weddings and 1982 Games are in EF, so have obviously been in storage for a fair while - and got a nice lustrous 1988 Bicent.

I'm puzzled by the 2011 Volunteer 20c design as it's superficially similar to the Women's Day and I don't get the Volunteer message for this coin?
BTW I don't think it is all that ugly - just doesn't make sense - and doesn't hold a candle to the Willie/Kate shocker 20c.....eeech....

The design is the IYV+10 logo (which seems to be a derivative of the IYV logo used on the 2001 $1) set amongst the UN wreath (which you will recognise from the 1995 20c).

You are correct that the logo itself does bear a surprising resemblance to the Womens Day design.

Personally I find the continual stream of UN inspired "year of whatever" commemoratives to be highly dubious in relevance, consequence or importance to Australia, and somewhat third worldly.

Perhaps someone at the RAM has taken up the Paul Keating "banana republic" cause?

PS: The Volunteers 20c seems to be in short supply in my neck of the woods - they must all be in Adelaide.

I'm still waiting for the FAO release to know we've totally made the grade.

In the meantime, perhaps someone in the RAM could get some inspiration from the America the Beautiful series and get to work...

A trickle of RAMs and 93's, but still no 85's. Thought you did pretty well on your Fed States last time - this round seems a bit leaner...

No UN's or 2011 Volunteers seen in this survey; very few Federations to be found....just a NSW and Norfolk in the 1000+ coins searched, 2 large head 2004 platy's was a good get, else nothing really of interest. No upsets.

There was a terribly thrashed 1966-84 era 20c that is so worn there is no way of telling the date...another for ebay maybe?
Maybe there should be a thread for the most terrible nick coins found in circulation...

Think I'll hold off a bit before I start up on the 5c pieces. They're not a good coin to do late at night!
