Before I begin: sorry for the short story. The story was much longer, then my computer crashed deleting all my work. Sometime ago, I bought a coin from a melt bin for $10. Only now do I realize its true value. This coin is a restrike of a 1848 20 skillings from the Danish Virgin Islands made in 1858. One of these cost $200+ Only 40,000 of these were ever minted and many were melted. You can tell it apart from the regular 1848 20 skillings by its non-reeded edge. The original had a reeded one. Why would a restrike be so valued you ask? Well see, the thing is when the territory became part of the U.S, it used counterstamped U.S. coinage. They then deicded to switch to their own, and only having left coin dies from 1848, they used them in 1858(or 56 not sure). Much less were made but they were created as currency, not as collectors restrikes. Pics: Edited by tzarmarko 06/14/2012 9:39 pm

Would appreciate some context to understand the significance of why the re-strike is so valued.

Very neat coin...can we get an edge shot? The 1848's edge was engrailed (a series of circular arcs curving in the same direction, meeting at angles, forming points outward ) not reeded. Your plain edge was minted in 1856.

Here are some edge shots: It doesn't show it too well, but the side is completely flat.

I see this coin listed in my Siegs catalogue from 1999. Values in DKK are as follows: 0--4000; 01--2500; 1+--1800. Yours has a bit of damage on one side, but nice find all the same!

Pity about the XX that somebody scratched by hand on the one side... That's probably why it was in a melt bin...
