This is a coin I'm trying to decide on. Its from an online dealer and his grade is AU55. Asking $145 I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you.

The grade is about right, but the price is a tad high. $100-ish is more like it, according to ebay and Heritage results. However, they're not seem commonly in that grade. If you want to spend that kind of money, buy this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1852-Silver-Thr...50_W0QQitemZ230093835011QQihZ013QQcategoryZ3356QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If you don't, I believe I might.

SuperDave, I like the one you recommended. I sent an email to the seller inquiring his return policy as its not stated in the auction. My only concern regarding that coin is the color, seems very dark.

Actually, the ebay coin looks like it's an original coin whereas the one you're showing above has been probably dipped.

The problem with Buy It Now stuff is, well, people Buy It Now. This one's gone. The good news is, I bought it. Although I still think the price is a tad high, I believe the stated grade is accurate and the surfaces are original. It's the highest-minted year of issue, but it's about as nice as AU gets. My offer stands, Shatsi. When I receive the coin, I will image it here in high resolution. If you still want it then, you can have it for the $150 I paid, plus the cost of insuring and shipping it to you. I just had to get it off the market before someone else did.

I just might take you on the offer. There was no return policy so I was hesitant. Looking forward to seeing our pics. Thanks!!

That toning is typical for the 1851-53 issues due to the fact that those were 75% silver 25% copper. 1854 onward had the standard 90-10 alloy.

That one's very nice, but pricey. I wonder if it might be toning over an older cleaning? The seller has a lot of slabbed stuff, but a lot of raw coins too.

Nice luster but there seem to be some damage to the rim around 3 o'clock?

Hummm, you could be right. You might ask the seller about it.

The seller said "there seems to be a strike issue that does not detract".
What does it mean?

"Something's wrong with this coin, but I don't think it detracts from the appearance because I'm selling it." If it's bad enough to be obvious in pics that small and that poor, imagine what it will look like in-hand. Pass it up.
