I didn't posted gold since a while - so ... here is a new gold cob :)

This 2 escudos was minted in 1613 the Felipe III in Sevilla by essayer V.
The mint mark and mint master are not visible, but the design / date stick according to my catalog (Calico)

6.77g and about 22mm wide.

Hope you like it :)

Here is a "friend" of this coin : this one has a clear essayer and mint mark (Sevilla V), as well as the king's ordinal completely visible.

You caught a good buy on that... seller didn't know what exactly it was and his description suffered accordingly. Looks perfectly legit, nice bold date, good weight.

A related piece from a few weeks back (thought at first yours was this one b/c I remembered the date being clear)... 1614 Seville 2E (he claims it's unlisted, but it is known):

Nice coins - I am not much of a cob lover but I can see that there could be a lot of opportunity for study in those series.

Thanks :)
The issue with those is that they are not cheap - and have so many variants.
Prices quickly skyrocket with the colonial gold ones - particularly the late mexican ones (thanks to the US market / shipwreck craze there).

But cobs are particularly interesting indeed (I prefer silver ... mostly for a budget point of view) - and there are very interesting parts in their history (mints, the way they were traveling, designs, etc...).
Particularly those following the Potosi scandal, when the "grid" design emerged, with many intermediary types.
Although there are maybe some new stuffs to find, those are already well documented.

realeswatcher : at the beginning, the guy was selling without paypal and in France only ... he changed his mind, hopefully for him ;)
It's the 3rd gold cob I bought that way :
* the other one is just under it - almost as struck, doubled on a poorly made planchet (140€ less than this last one)
* the 3rd one was posted earlier (Felipe IV 1661 R 2 escudos, Bogota).
Those were all found in France by metal detector owners (actually I was only told so for the first one - but I'm sure it's the same for the two others).

I was also following the one being sold by coinworldtv - I bought him some nice coins already, but he usually knows how to sell those at high prices and he have usual clients...
Actually, that date was not listed until recently, the previous Calico didn't had it for example. Depends which reference he is using.
His coin was even better, with the essayer, mint mark, and more sharp.
I see you have some nice ebay queries as well ;)

When I lived in New England, I recall a fellow I saw most mornings at Dunkin Donuts. He had a very nice High Grade 8E cob that he wore around his neck.

After we became better friends I asked if I could look at it. It was in fact real. I had expected a jewelry copy so I was surprised to see such a nice coin as jewelry. Then he told me the story. He was a former professional diver and had discovered this coin along with some others in the Florida keys. He mounted the BEST one.

It had been mounted over 20 years but in the area protected by the mount you could see it must have been near MS. But at the centers both sides it was worn from wear down to only VF or so.

Almost made me cry.

With the current crisis, I'm sure there are unaware sellers giving our family coins to scrap metal buyers ... with those going to melt ...
What an idea, wearing an 8e, that's heavy, gosh :D (and it's worth a nice car at least, particularly those)
