Because, unfortunately, not all potential buyers are capable of the math.
Rest in Peace

I hear ya, OSMS. I get a little tired of someone describing a 1951 item as an "old antique" when I was well into grade school by then and probably had to use the same thing. What does that make me, anyway? A fossil?

Answer that at your own risk.

Its a listing trick. Youll see post civil war coins listed too. By including that every time someone searches for anything civil war or the civil war coins their listing shows up

I think stating the age or whether or not it's Civil War era, WWII era, or any other significant historical event is just a sales gimmick.

Reminds me of some plastic display pieces I've seen with the title "Coins of WWII" emblazoned on it. The holder is basically filled with a bunch of circulated junk with the dates 1941-1945. The coins, of course, are not worth any more than melt. People then sell this junk in a fancy frame to unsuspecting buyers for many times what the coins would otherwise be worth (think Home Shopping Network).

Another thing I get really tired of is "RARE!" Who does a search for rare? If you have to tell me it is rare I shouldn't be buying it.

Simple. Tons of people think just because something is old, it's valuable.

Actually... a lot of people. "Rare coin" is a very popular search term on ebay. The one that should really upset you is L@@K.

Oh man. I can't stand that. I have actually not bid on coins because of L@@K. I also despise it's close relative LQQK.

To cover themselves from an "Item Not As Described" chargeback - math is hard.

I too am not a fan of gimmicky "key words" used to get more search hits or @@ to be an eye-catch gimmick. Maybe they work, but not on me.

The comment about "not as described" brings up a question/issue tho. IMO, you shouldn't have to designate a reason for returning a coin. "Deceiving pics" would be the #1 category for that IMO, and it obviously isn't listed. I know they claim that "buyer remorse" isn't a valid reason but I don't know that they can police that or rule on it. So they shouldn't even require a reason really, IMO.

If you don't like it in-hand, on anything that is bought off of pics, you shouldn't have to explain. Part of the "pics" roulette is that it sometimes wins and sometimes loses, that is part of the deal IMO. If they required perfect professional-grade clear pics to list then that might be a different story. They only "hope" for that tho and don't enforce it in any way.

Haha, I totally agree...

I was going to mention the "rare" thing too, I mean some of the items described as rare are really not, and if they are so rare how has the seller got 100's of them?

Also surely the description of anything as antique less than 100 years old is a misrepresentation.

My pet hate is "very unique" its either unique or it isn't...no need for the word very!
