Hello, I found this quarter while going through some pocket change. It is a 1966 Washington quarter. The front looks fine, but I have no idea what happened to the back. Is it anything special? I took the best pictures I could with my iPod, sorry it's the best I can do right now. Any help is appreciated.

It's some sort of damage. It's been filed down or something.

CAR33. Photo is not really clear enough but, let's see what the experts say. Could very well be PMD.

is the obverse as damaged or is does it still look good?

if that's true, my first guess would be the coin may have been enclosed in a holder like this cent

Yes, the obverse looks fine. That could be what happened.

the spot for the coin in the enclosed holder probably wasn't as thick as an actual coin, so they may have ground down the reverse edge to make it fit

Kind of looks like a rabid saber toothed beaver.
Very rare in this country.

The quarter subject in this thread is the result of a grinding wheel and someone with time on their hands. It has nothing to do with mint errors, and it is not the center of an encasement. It is simple damage.
