I think our coinage is artistically of atrocious hideousness. Would it be possible, without asking the permission of Congress, to employ a man like St. Gaudens to give us a coinage that would have some beauty?

Sincerely yours,

Theodore Roosevelt

This short, blunt letter (offered in the Heritage August 2-3 Philadelphia Signature Auction) is responsible for some of the finest coins ever minted in the US. The High Relief Double Eagles and the Indian Eagle, along with the Mercury dime and the Walking Liberty half (which spawned the ASE series) that were designed by St Gaudens' pupil Adolph Weinman.

Why hasn't Theodore Roosevelt been honored with a commemorative coin?
We have a series of Quarters commemorating the National Parks that almost certainly wouldn't exist without his efforts.

Yes, I know, he will be on a (NIFC) Presidential dollar next year, but this man deserves a full commemorative silver dollar/gold coin set.
