I picked up 5 rolls of dimes and one was clearly short. I counted it and it was 3 dimes short of a full roll.
However, this same roll did have a 1947 so I was still happy with the result. I had thoughts of telling them not because I wanted 30 cents but because I thought they should know. In the end I did nothing as it might cause me trouble.
Being new to this I was curious how often the rest of you get shorted on rolls.

I mainly search cent rolls and mostly machine wrapped and I can't remember ever being shorted. I have been shorted a few time with CWR's but more often I have found a dime or two in a roll John1

Most of the banks in Australia but coins into little resealable bags to give to customers, instead of rolls. I have been shorted many times and rarely received extra. Its annoying but I just take it as one of those things you have to put up with.

If you are searching a missing coin here or there is the cost of doing business I'm just curious how often people try and cheat the system. When I was younger I used to worry about getting stuck with Canada coins in my quarter rolls but now they are worth as much if not more than the US coins. Perhaps that is why I don;t see them as often as I used to.

I get shorted on my penny rolls all the time. Given that we should be happy our bank tellers allow us to do what we do... it just the price we pay for our hobby. Now a disrespectful coin dealer, like Southland Coins in Lake Charles, shorting me an ASE? I would/did give him every word applicable in my vocabulary.

There is one customer at the bank I go to that always seems to short their rolls, and rolls them in the same wrappers. Once it was so bad that I pointed it out in the tray and the teller was rather surprised. She knows who's bringing them in and is now being a bit more leery about accepting them without looking.

I have been relatively lucky in this area. I have been shorted a couple of times, but have managed to get an extra in the roll more often than a shorted roll.

I've been shorted a lot and I agree that it's part of collecting & searching rolls. However, there was a period where I getting boxes of halves from String & Son and was being shorted by a half or two in 8 - 10 rolls per box. I decided that was not acceptable so I got a scale and determined the weight of 20 halves and the wrapper and started weighing the rolls prior to opening them. When I found short rolls, I took them back to the back and got m money back for those rolls. The bank tellers were very nice about and even apologized.

just did a box of customer wrapped nickels. about 40 out of the 50 rolls were a nickel short. So, I'm out $2. I've done thousands of bank wrapped rolls and found one once that was 5 nickels short. Sometimes they have dimes, sometimes a Lincoln Cent.

Not that I'm aware of, but when you're opening a dozen or so rolls of pennies at at time, counting the pennies doesn't always cross one's mind.

I think the question should be, "Ever not been shorted in a roll?"
Coin rolling machines are not perfect. And the more you order the more you'll find variation in the count. It's not easy to track this, but I've seen short and long rolls for Halves and Pennies.
With silver being found I care little for the occasional loss. When I'm not finding silver it's another matter completely.

I have NEVER been shorted in BWR, however usually get shorted a couple coins in a box of CWR. That being said, I actually was over $2.60 in a CWR box of dimes.....so I can't complain. Its all part of the cost of the hobby.
P.S. How many of you actually replace the coins shorted from your rolls, and how many of you give them back as short as you got them?
I always replace the coins that I was shorted.

I had a BoA I would order brinks penny boxes from. But when I upped the order to around 50 boxes a week something happened and the boxes I was getting had multiple rolls in each box that were only half filled. It was strange because they were the plastic wraps and still it sealed many before the 50 penny count. I stopped ordering pennies from that bank after getting 2 weeks of pick-ups like this.
If you're concerned, it may be a good idea to get a coin counter to check the boxes. I found the counter only made me more paranoid, because I was able to tell how short the pick-ups were and how much the coin counters at banks shorted me.
