I find not many people collect notes here ? Mainly coins ? I collect mainly Australian pre decimal banknotes, does anyone else ?

There are a heap of collectors here that just love banknotes I like them but much prefer the artistry and feel of coins myself In the scale of things banknotes are a recent idea, coins go back through the millennium , that's what makes them so appealing and collectible

Hmm.. Notes are much harder to look after, you can't fold them or have tears and creases, bugs eat them, they have to be protected from light and moisture, and it goes on and on. And I don't follow the serial number thing; have no idea what all the stuff is supposed to mean. All I understand is that if you get one with all the same numbers then its interesting. And people like repeating number too. The only notes I own are the $5 federation notes, I got 10 consecutive notes from the bank, as new when they were released.

I agree maintainence is harder than coins and you probably need more $ than coins to go into pre decimal notes, but I just love the artistry and designs !

I'm not sure, but price is probably a factor. There's probably a greater range with coins too.

I prefer notes I think... I disagree they are harder to look at, when they are all laid out in an album I think they look more impressive than coins. Serial numbers are of little interest to me, I just want damage free examples and I am happy.
I like coins too but recently I have been focusing more on my notes, I am sure I will go back to coins again soon though :)

Banknotes are the easiest things to store and they are a great investment

I love notes because the're harder to be kept in top condition.
In the case of a coin, provided it's disease free (i.e copper disease of PVC acid storage), it's pretty hard to ruin a coin.
I love the old notes, but they do cost dollars. I'm looking at investing a large sum of money in one item soon, but I think I'd prefer to buy a 1925 Penny in UNC or a 1933 Shilling or Florin in Choice UNC over something like an UNC 1936 George V Ten Shilling First Prefix D/0 Riddle Sheehan or an UNC 1939 Five Pound Sheehan MacFarlane regular prefix or another pre-decimal to a similar value. I think for an investment, there may be more people chasing one of those coins in top notch grade. But with investment, it's all about resale.
I'm a lover of notes...but I'm still thinking that investing may lie in coins. I should have a bit of a look from a 2002 to 2012 catalogue (10 years difference).

Those notes have enjoyed decent returns over the years. There's not too many around though in UNC. Happy to provide any information you don't already know about any of the notes you mentioned. Like print runs, known serials in unc, previous realised prices, etc...

Simply handling them with your bare hands can knock them down a grade or two if you're not being careful. However, they take up very little space, storage-wise.

Judging by the number of bidders on ebay, coins are more popular than notes, but there are still a lot of interest in notes. My own collection is now starting to lean towards bank notes. A high grade pre decimal bank note is a thing of beauty.

Ive spent more on notes than coins lately. Interest seems to have boomed in the past few months on the forum.

There's a story on Today Tonight being advertised here in Adelaide about the shonky nature of the bank note industry. While hate Today Tonight and channel nine's version of it it might be worth a watch. Personally I never hear anything good about the banknote market and this is why I have pretty much nothing to do with it. The whole thing just smacks of rampant speculation, cleaning, and to be honest, the numismatic version of used car dealers.
