I think 1840 may have been a fixed date for these for some few years. As with ASE's, silver coins in India were hoarded as a store of wealth, and consequently saw less circulation. Altough these are easily found in VF or EF, they are scarcer in uncirculated. Pleasing coin.

sel_69l: You are correct - they used this date up until the end of the East India Company's governance in India in 1857-8. The crowned Victoria coins replaced these from 1862 onward.

Quote: Wow, looks really good!. Do you mind me asking how much you paid. I paid €17,- ($20,-) I think that's a nice price.. I'm not a British India specialist, far from that.. But such a good looking coin for his age I couldn't resist buying.. Tomorrow I hope to find it in the mail... with a bunch of other British India & Republic India coins I bought from the same seller..

Nice coin! The 1/2 Rupee is the hardest to find among all the silver coins. You got a great deal on this coin. Looks like AU-UNC to me. @ Mr T : The best reference is by Fred Pridmore. The book is very very hard to find. They have it in the ANA library though. I also refer the below link. It has more details than Krause. www.baldwin.co.uk/coins-of-india

From what I understand, Fred Pridmore's book is also quite expensive too.

Very useful. I can't help but wonder whether some of the mules listed are just restrikes from the 1960s though.
