Proof-like coins are difficult. I've struggled with them myself. You can try axial lighting.

SuperDave is expert at them. He has suggested using a ringlight. I don't shoot many proofs so haven't really put much effort into perfecting a setup so I'll leave it to those who have been successful...Ray

Thanks Captain, I'll try axial lighting. I have several of these examples, so it will take some time (I have plenty) to get things right. The only problem I have is that I am many miles from a large city. Hopefully SuperDave is around to respond. What about the scratches?

No idea for GSA holders. There are various polishing compounds that work to varying degrees on TPG slabs.

I've been working on this 1883CC GSA dollar, and finally arrived at this image. It' graded MS65 DPL by NGC. What are you thoughts and opinions?

I'm of the opinion that you have made it obvious this coin has extremely reflective surfaces.

I'd try to increase the contrast a skotch, maybe two skotches, but generally it looks great. The cameo contrast is really nice. There's a brighter area at the top - it's either glare on the holder or light getting into the lens from someplace other than the coin. If you can eliminate that, the coin will pop even more.

Ham...that's a really nice image! I tried playing around with it a bit and it takes well to processing, so it appears you have things pretty well-balanced. Captain's right on regarding the glare at the top. Move the light to just a bit lower angle and it will go away, or perhaps add a small piece of black paper over the light to keep it from reflecting directly off the holder. A bit of sharpening really helps the image as well, but don't over-do it. It doesn't look like you did any sharpening post-downsizing, but that's always a good practice as the downsizing algorithms tend to leave the image a bit less sharp that the original...Ray

Thanks SuperDave, Captain, and Ray. I'll work with those suggestions. I believe I finally have a feel for what I am trying to accomplish. I just need some helpful suggestions from time to time. I'll keep posting.

Did I over do it? I went 2 click more on the contrast and one more on the sharpness.

Wow, now that pops! I think you got it about right. Does the picture give you the same impression as the actual coin? If so, then you've nailed it.

Looks a little dark to me Ham, and I think you still have some room on sharpening. I took the liberty to tweak the image a tad and this is what I came up with...

Thanks for the input Captain and Ray! My image pretty much depicts the coin. I like what you did Ray. May I ask what corrections you made? It looks to me that you added some brightness and sharpened is some, like you suggested, correct?

In DPP I gave it one level of "tone curve assist" gamma correction to get rid of the shadows, and sharpening of "60". That's a bit more sharpening than you really need but I don't think it's over-blown. Maybe "40" or "50" would have been enough...Ray

For the record, I do all of my postprocessing on a full-size image, before downsizing to post here. The downsizing itself adds sharpness and apparent contrast, making me need to do less.
