Well, I started getting back into coin collecting after a 21 year break (I was living outside the US). I have been focusing on a few series (Large Cents, Indian cents, Red Lincolns, Mercury dimes)and been busy visiting a local coin dealer (40+ years in the business) who has been teaching me loads of stuff, and visited my first coin show last weekend (the monthly exhibition in Parsippany NJ). Today, I bought $20 each of pennies and nickels from my bank just to see what was out there. Nothing major found, but it was fun: Pennies: 1941 1946 1951D 1951S 1952 1952D 1957 1958 Nickels: 1939 1940 1941 1942P-War Nickel 1994P-W Nickel 1946 1954D I found some Lincoln cents (5) that I will take a closer look at since they had some potential errors. I'm using the older coins that I find to make two circulated books each for my two young boys, so when they get old enough and if they get into the hobby, they have a starting point. I'm also trying to make an agreement with the local branch manager to hold any silver coins for me. We'll see how that goes tomorrow.

For only searching $40 in coins you had an amazing haul. I sort 3-5 times that amount of nickels to find maybe 1 WN.
Nice work!

CWS: Yes I was surprised too. I thought 2 WN was a pretty good find for a $20 search. I didn't think I would find any. Kind of disappointed about the number of wheaties found. Guess things have changed since I last searched +20 years ago.
Tzarmarko: I went to Parsippany for the first time last Sunday. I wasn't buying much. I was more into checking out the show, talking to dealers and seeing the dealer offers. I liked the show enough and also found a few dealers that have some coins which fit my needs. I will go again in September. I did however pick up a few coins:
Mercs: 1916 MS63 FSB 1917 MS63 FSB 1930 MS63 SB
Indians 1864 Bronze EF
Lincolns 1948S red (MS60 or better)
Large Cents 1831 F-12 1846 F-12 1856 VF-20
Well, going to get a few more rolls and search again tonight. Happy hunting everyone.

Bought another $20 of nickels and $20 of dimes. Only 6 old dates (for the kids books) but no WN. Nothing in the dimes. Kind of confirms that my first search netting two WN was lucky.

Bought a box of pennies today. Pretty good haul with 19 wheaties found: 1935 1939 1940 1941 x2 (going to take a closer look at these) 1944 1945 x2 1946 1949D 1950D 1951 1951D 1953 1953D x2 1956D 1958 x2

Did a box each of pennies and nickels today: 19 wheaties with one date unreadable (194?) from 1935 to 1958D. About 7 Canadians. 28 old nickels with three War Nickels (43P,44P,45P). The 43P is very nice; XF in a beautiful golden green tone. That one is going into a folder. Also found a 2000D that looks like it came out of a mint set. Also found with the nickels 3 Canadian 5 cent pieces, 1 5 cent piece from Bermuda and a UK 20 pence piece.

Finished another box of pennies. Picked up 22 wheaties with the earliest being a 1920. Two 1955's but you know how it goes, no DD. I did find a nice 1958 red cent except it has some laquer on the right obverse, and a nice 2009 S. Picked up a few Canadians too with my oldest found so far, a 1949. I'm about half way through a nickel box and found my first V, a 1902 AG. A bunch of old nickels with the only notable so far being a 1940 in excellent condition.

I never really thought I would find so many decent coins. Nothing is really valuable, but it has been fun finding the things I have found. I also got my nieces into roll searching with me. When they come over and help me out, I give them an old coin from a bunch I purchased from my local shop. They are stashing these coins away in their respective jewelery boxes.

I hope so. My nieces are starting to look out for stuff in their change. My boys are still too young. I also want them to know how beautiful some of our coins are, especially the older ones. The girls like the idea that they get an old coin from me if they help search some rolls. CRH has a sense of irony. I posted above that I purchased a few cheap coins to give to the nieces for helping. One of the coins I purchased was a well worn 1902 V nickel. What happens? The very same day searching nickel rolls, I pulled out a well worn 1902 V nickel. Yesterday, I did search 2 boxes of pennies. 42 wheaties with the oldest being 1918. Getting earlier, and still looking for those elusive Indians.

You do realize that finding 40+ wheats in 2 boxes is rare?
