A few years ago when silver price was low many 40%ers were thrown back. Here I found a 67 with the marks from coin rolling machine in the middle of a machine wrapped roll. The marks showed that it used to be at the ending position. Edited by Yinzi50 12/17/2012 01:17 am

40%ers didn't really become worthwhile to pull until what? The late '90's? It's also possible a present-day searcher missed the coin.

if you think thats crazy I've had long time collectors tell me back in the 1980s even when silver was $50 an ounce 40%'s were thrown back. heres one example on this thread https://goccf.com/t/135169as for the coin, poor thing I hate it when I find a coin with those marks on it.

As of the early 2000's local dealers were only paying $0.05 over face value for 40% Kennedy halves. I remember unloading a bunch just to clear some space in my coin safe. It just wasn't worth hanging onto them (or so I thought).

High inflation back in 1980 (around 18-20%), a recession, (my father built 28 homes in 1979, and only two in 1980),and silver pushing $50 an oz. Adjusted for inflation, what's that in todays dollars? I believe refining costs hindered the value of the 40% half, and the Hunts wanted as pure silver as possible in their race to corner the market. I was roll hunting dimes, halves and quarters then, at 17 years old and a high school senior. Saw tons of local ads buying 90% silver.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

My 11 year old niece was dying, I asked her what was wrong, she said "I want to go home", Why whats wrong I asked. "All this old guy talk is so boring" Im 36, her dad is 41, the oldest guy that was there....lol.. I said really you think were old, she said yes.....haha
